Review
"In the age of innumerable populist polymaths, Eco is the exception, a commentator who makes sense of what so often seems senseless. All the more reason to read him" Time Out "That he can write with equal agility on such subjects as the World Cup, St Thomas Aquinas, and how the wearing of tight blue jeans constricts the interior life as well as the body...in a a style that is both serious and diverting, is an achievement unparalleled in British journalism" New Statesman "There is enough liveliness here, and enough imaginative suggestiveness, to keep the reader furiously entertained" Sunday Times "A scintillating collection of writings by one of the most influential thinkers of our time" Los Angeles Times "Eco is...a highly entertaining and perceptive "decoder" of the world" Times Literary Supplement

From blue jeans and theme parks to ideologies and semiotics in this superb set of essays
By Philip Spires
Faith In Fakes by Umberto Eco is a superbly entertaining beginner's guide to semiotics. To what? Semiotics is the study and interpretation of symbols. In our increasingly iconic age, the discipline has much to say, and to do so must delve deeper and wider, into sociology, philosophy and psychology. In this superb selection of essays, Umberto Eco discusses topics as widely spaced as blue jeans, the film Casablanca, ancient monuments and theme parks. Throughout, he manages to communicate intensely difficult ideas with ease, making Faith In Fakes a truly enlightening read that both informs on theory and entertains via the mundane.

The reader must be prepared to go part-way into the discipline, however, especially in relation to specific authors and rarefied vocabulary. While names such as McLuhan, Foucault and Barthes might not deter most readers, words such as oneiric, corybantism, synecdoche, mytonymy, eversive and anthopophagy could prove to be stumbling blocks. There aren't many of these specialist words, however, because overall Umberto Eco's style is beautifully communicative and easy to read.

A particularly pleasing piece was Eco's analysis of the film Casablanca and its cult status. He contrasts Casablanca with other films, ones that might be cited as "works of art". He then makes a distinction not because these other films are intrinsically "better", but because they aim higher in that they are better focused and constructed, intellectually.

Basically they have potential meaning or significance, have been well written, well acted and well characterised, though most of them might not achieve any of their targets. Hence they are not necessarily better films.

Casablanca, on the other hand, Eco describes as a hodgepodge (bricolage) of ideas, badly characterised, poorly written and ultimately incredible, either as a film or as a reflection of any kind of reality. (Eco, I am sure, would also argue here that this latter point is wholly valid since the film employs realism both in its style and in its definite historical setting.)

But the point is that a near random juxtaposition of elements eventually becomes an art form of its own, able to make statements in its own terms. Copying from one learned text is called plagiarism, Copy from fifty and it's called research. Use one clich and it's culpable. Use a hundred and it's called Gaudi. It's a brilliant point.

As a film, Casablanca, he argues, never inhabits a single genre, never communicates merely a single message. It is presented almost as a series of unrelated tableaux, where the characters do as required by the passing scenario. It thus becomes a pastiche where there's something for everyone, where it can become more entertaining to spot, categorise, recognise and then discuss the loosely-related vignettes than to appreciate the whole, because there is no whole to appreciate.

McLuhan advised us that the medium had become the message. Eco takes us further, illustrating how mass media are no longer conduits for ideology because they themselves have become the ideology. So now, when we watch television news that concentrates on celebrity and the entertainment industry, we ought to be rendered keenly aware of the motives and interests at play. When, come to think of it, did you last hear a wholly negative film review? So where lies the line between reviewer and promoter?

We seem, according to Eco's logic, to confuse three similar, related, but different concepts - popular, populist and demotic. What we call popular culture should really be labelled populist culture. Popularity is its aim, not yet its achievement. In a row over music downloaded via the internet, reports in July 2008 claim that over eighty per cent of musicians earn less than five thousand British pounds a year in royalties. And remember that they are the ones that actually have the recording contracts!

So what should we call this not so popular popular music? I argue we should refer to populist music and populist culture, because it aims to achieve popularity, though little of it ever will. But what happens if or when it does? At that point its very success becomes its prime platform for further promotion. Now it carries the illusion of being demotic, that it both stemmed from and is the property of ordinary people, rather than, obviously, a marketed commodity aiming to achieve a status that will foster that illusion. Its adherents to date can now be trotted out as evidence of its potential to attract and as proof of its worthiness to do so. The medium has thus become the ideology, the mechanism by which a commercial enterprise that aspires to popularity from a narrow sectional origin might achieve popularity and then use its achievement to seek more of the same.

Finally, it is the demotic currency provided by success that then suggests we should make aesthetic judgments on that basis. Success becomes proof of worth, almost as if the winner has run for election to that office. Success then becomes the only basis for aesthetic judgments, thus denying the validity of those made an any other basis, because they lack demotic legitimacy and must therefore be based on snobbery or elitism or both. The ideology thus rejects any basis for aesthetic judgment except that which its own ideology defines. Aesthetics, incidentally, tend to resurface when the advocate is reminded of the success, and hence aesthetic worth, of The Bridies' Song or Remember You're A Womble!

The essays in Faith In Fakes by Umberto Eco are stimulating, eye-opening and enlightening. They provoke thought rather than the desire to write a simple review. For that, I apologise.

A curious mlange of insight and observation
By ARWoollock
The first thing to say about this text, is that it is really a series of unrelated polemics, Op-Eds, musings and intellectual ponderings that would have done better to be separated out and sold in like collections, not shoved together and bound like spouses' unknown partners thrown together at a reunion BBQ. I mention that first because whilst Eco does elude to the book being an eclectic mix, it is probably a little more eclectic and a little less cohesive than one might have hoped for. Perhaps this is testament to his versatility or perhaps it is testament to the greed of publishers - probably the latter. The second reason I mention this is having just read Baudrillard's 'America' I couldn't help but feel that the beginning of this book was a significantly less desirable attempt to cast the Euro-philosopher's eye Westward with rather dire results. To compare 'America' and this would be a great mistake and probably not a fair fight.

Perhaps the greatest charm of this work is the Italian philosopher's weltanshauung (as opposed to the French philosophers'). As per fashion, alcohol, car design and architecture, so philosophy presents itself differently in the mind. Eco seemed rather more human and witty at times, something Baudrillard could never be accused of, and this resonates a certain sympathetic tone in the reader's chest.

One very small downside to this text is just how dated it is, and whilst in purely philosophical terms that isn't a problem, in historical discourse it is. Clearly Eco was commenting on events fresh in the lives of late '60s, '70s Italians (Europeans) and that rather comes across like reading an old newspaper you found stuffed in the wall. The work then becomes something of a historical curiosity rather than a work of philosophy, which is a shame.

All in all `Faith in Fakes' represents a noble spoke on the wheel of postmodernist discourse and theory and without it we would, no doubt be worse off.

Old "New" vs. New "Old"
By James A. Boa
The appearance of the 1999 Oxford Book of English Verse, edited by Christopher Ricks, makes us ask about the 1972 New Oxford Book of English Verse, edited by Helen Gardner. Since they are both anthologies of centuries of poetry, there is a lot of overlap. But there are a lot of differences too. In order to include modern poems (Gardner stops at 1950), Ricks has had to cut, and some of my favorite poems did not make the cut: Tennyson's "Crossing the Bar", Keats's Last Sonnet, and Yeats's "An Irish Airman Foresees his Death", to name just three.
With "Verses on the Death of Dr. Swift", both books excerpt, and just what is excerpted is instructive. I prefer Ricks here. And Ricks's preservation of spelling and punctuation is in my opinion a better choice, though he then goes and leaves out Coleridge's marginal notes in "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner."
So, if you care about poetry, you need both books. Where they are different, they are both valuable. Where they are the same, they are not quite the same, and a comparison proves instructive. Or at least it has so proved to me.

An old favorite, a good beginning
By A Customer
My nightstand is small, so only a few books can fit. The space is reserved for those trusted friends that I turn to late at night, or when I'm sick. Gardner's volume is among them.
This anthology covers 900 pages of verse from Great Brittain, in a variety of styles and subjects. As an introduction to the deep range of English poetry, it had very few peers, and the only rival in taste in selection (both what is included and excluded) is the 5-volume anthology Auden & Pearson did for the Viking/Penguin Portables. Buy it; read it, a little at a time or straight through; reread it. You won't be disappointed.

A good standard anthology
By Jon Corelis
Dame Helen Gardner in her introduction stated that The New Oxford Book of English Verse is "not a revision of Q's [Quiller-Couch's original Oxford anthology] but a new anthology," though she admits that "I have in many ways followed my predecessor's example." Both remarks are justified: G's vision of English poetry, though recognizably the same as Q's, is from a different historical and critical perspective. For instance, in this anthology there is more churchgoing at the expense of dallying in the greenwood: it is significant that though G's opening triad shares with Q's the "Cuckoo Song" and "The Irish Dancer," G has substituted for the exquisitely passionate "Alison" the exquisitely chaste "In Praise of Mary." Individual readers may welcome this or not, but one can only approve most of the revisions G has made. Consider Donne, who in Q's selection and contexting seems a metaphysical curiosity, a poet who developed an eccentric, albeit interesting, version of Elizabethan lyric. G's Donne is revealed as one of the most vibrantly alive human beings who ever lived. But it is after Keats, the section of Q's book which as G remarks with diplomatic mildness "had always given least satisfaction," where G has done what Q should have done in 1939. Most of the clunky Victorian poetic furniture has been hauled off to the Sally Ann (though G could not steel herself to throw out dear old "they told me, Heraclitus ...", and that great enforcer of yawns Matthew Arnold is still droning on about his carefree Oxford days), and the nervous splendors of twentieth century verse are intelligently grafted onto tradition according to a program which clearly and properly divides them into the build-up to "The Waste Land", "The Waste Land", and the aftermath of "The Waste Land."

One of the magical characteristics of great poetry is that it can alter the earlier poetry which influenced it. No one who grew up reading "The Waste Land" will be able to rid Spenser or Shakespeare or Webster of the overtones which Eliot drew from them, and nobody who knows or cares anything about poetry would want to try. The greatest achievement of G's edition is to give us modernism not only as an extension of tradition but as the climax of it, and the impact of "The Waste Land" in G's setting is the prime example of this: the song of Eliot's nightingale arising from the frightening darkness of the urban wilderness, however tragic, is also consoling, since we realize we have been hearing it forever.

And yet the advantages of G's critical perspective have ominous implications exactly because it is a critic's perspective. In G, Q's balancing act between the critic as summarizer of taste and as the prescriptor of it has shifted in favor of the latter. We can see this for instance in G's determination to open up the anthology to "satiric, political, epistolary, and didactic verse," a decision which however justifiable surely is not based on any growing popularity of those forms among the public between 1939 and 1972. It is based instead on the fact that the search of scholars for new topics to write about which do not already bear a crushing weight of commentary has resulted in those genres becoming recognized English department specializations. Since academic politics requires that no one in the department be left out, it is necessary that representatives of all these genres be included in the poetic canon, and anthologies are the primary means of communicating this judgment to the public. We may see G's edition as standing at a crossroads, or perhaps a better metaphor would be a hilltop, a critical vantage point from which a broader and more judicious survey may be made than previously, but which is also farther removed from the ordinary social world.

But despite these criticisms, I'd recommend this book as one of the handful of poetry anthologies which should find a place in every personal library, and as a good guide to the received canon of great poetry in English.

Meh.
By Katherine Hudgens
I rented the book from Amazon for the online semester, so there was no access code to WileyPlus and I had to purchase it separately. Frankly I didn't even need the textbook, WileyPlus has the whole book online. I've barely touched the book since Chapter 3.

This textbook is, well, a textbook. It's dull, dry and challenging to absorb many of the lessons. I find most of the examples confusing and unclear, so I just do a Google search for the principle being taught, then go back to WileyPlus to do a review, work practice problems and do my homework. I was struggling in class at first, but now that I've adopted this method I'm doing much better! Next semester, I will be using the same book for Accounting Principles II, but I will not extend the rental.

Just what I wanted
By Colleen
I ordered this book for my class in the US and I received an international copy. Initially, I was upset until I realized that this book is literally the exact same--only paper back and much cheaper.

This book changed my life.
By Ray
Wow, what a phenomenal book. I like to read this before I go to sleep at night. It calms me down and I will read about different cost allocations as though I'm counting sheep. It's so soothing to see numbers all over the page. I don't know what I would do without this book. I would recommend everyone to buy a second copy to place under a firm pillow. I hear that some people can absorb material directly through this process. I never knew I lacked so much knowledge in cost accounting. I would have tried to apply my indirect overhead costs to the wrong activities had I not read this book.

The Woman Beneath the Skin: A Doctor's Patients in Eighteenth-Century Germany, by Barbara Duden

Despite historians' interest in cultural representations of the body, we tend to think of human anatomy and physiology as scientific fact, not historical artifact. In this study Barbara Duden asserts that the most basic biological and medical teams that we use to describe our own bodies - male or female, healthy or sick - are indeed cultural constructions. She sets out to cross the traditional boundary between history and nature by gaining access to the inner existence of a group of women who lived in bodies very different from our own. These women were the patients of Johann Storch, a physician who lives and worked in the town of Eisenach, Germany, during the first half of the 18th century. Storch meticulously documented the medical histories of approximately 1800 women of all ages and social stations, often in their own words. This rich and unique record of complaints, symptoms, diagnoses, and treatments reveals an alien understanding of the female body and its function. Physical processes - digestion, menstruation, pregnancy - were not associated with discrete internal organs. Blood ebbed and flowed rather than circulated; pregnancy did not exist until quickening; menses could be discharged in the form of tears. Physical examination was not necessary to medical care, and in many cases the doctor had no direct contact with his patient. Barbara Duden uses his material to reanimates the female body that Johann Storch treated and that his patients inhabited, showing that its structure, function and meaning - and therefore those of our own bodies - belong to history as well as to nature.

Review
Duden splendidly succeeds in recreating this submerged and secret world of female consciousness, and the ambiguous role of the physician in maintaining it. An important milestone.
--Roy Porter (Wellcome Institute, London)

While modern readers may be initially alienated by the way in which phenomena cited in Duden's profuse quotations from [Dr. Johannes Pelargiusi] Storch's journals conflict with contemporary 'certainties' about the body...her approach ultimately makes the desired point: the culturally contingent 'boundary that separates the body, and especially the body beneath the skin, from the world around it' likewise conditions contemporary understandings, not only of what is known about our bodies but also about how people in other times and places have 'imagined' their bodies.
--Patricia Herminghouse (Signs)

Review

Aus den Rezensionen:

"… Die Abschnitte sind knapp gehalten; die Informationen werden komprimiert weitergegeben, immer ist ein starker Praxisbezug vorhanden. Die Autoren, bekanntermaen ausgewiesene Experten der interventionellen Kardiologie, geben einen breiten berblick ber die hufigsten Komplikationen … Alle Passagen werden durch umfangreiches Bildmaterial ergnzt. In allen Kapiteln wird auf umfangreiche weitergehende Literatur verwiesen …" (in: internistische praxis, 2007, Vol. 47, Issue 3, S. 476)

From the Back Cover

Percutaneous coronary catheterization has become one of the most common medical interventions performed in the field of interventional cardiology. With the continual technical improvements in interventional cardiology, more procedures are being performed and higher risk patients are being treated. Complications are bound to occur, and when they do, they are distressing to the clinician. Too often, clinicians performing an interventional procedure are unprepared and lack complete familiarity with some of the possible adverse events or the many creative methods available to them to reverse or mitigate the event.

This book provides the reader with a valuable overview of the complications associated with coronary interventions. The editor, Samuel M. Butman, MD, has assembled a group of contributors renowned for their expertise in interventional cardiology. Chapters are concise but comprehensive and present actual case examples for review. Topics covered include complications related to medication, coronary guidewires, coronary stenting, atherectomy devices, and radiation exposure. Useful illustrations reinforce key concepts.

Complications of Percutaneous Coronary Interventions fills a void for interventional cardiologists, residents, and technologists who need to learn about effectively preventing complications or who simply want to more confidently institute appropriate treatment.

Deadly Hearts: A Descent Short (The Descent Series Book 8), by SM Reine

Dead divorcees. Demonic possession. Elise Kavanagh stabbing things and...baking cookies? It's just another bloody Valentine's Day in the life of a demon hunter and her witchy partner.

This is a short story about the length of two chapters in my other books (9000 words), which takes place before the events of Death's Hand. It's a gift to my existing readers, who believe deep in their hearts that James's butt needs to be slapped once in a while. I agree completely, readers. Trust me.

Happy Valentine's Day! :)

    Great short story
    By T. Saldana
I have grown to love The Descent Series and this short story is no exception. Deadly Hearts gives us a glimpse at the relationship between James and Elise in their earlier years together. This is a good short story to add to your collection.

    I freaking LOVE SM Reine
    By Brandy Johnson
I ran across SM Reine about 60 days ago when I was searching similar authors to the series I'd just completed. The first book was a free read (always an enticing factor) but I couldn't stop. I went from one series to the next and completed all the books in the ascension, descent, and Cain chronicles series....I'm currently reading the witches series until Reine can finish the next book. I LOVE her writing and although I would like to see James get the butt whipping he so deserves, I'd love to see he and Elise happily together along with Seth and Rylie.....the good guys should win out

    Cookies and demons...all in a day's work
    By PMBL
Elise and James pose as a normal couple with a haunted house in order to catch a demon that has possessed a charlatan exorcist. And apparently Elise doesn't bake...ever. Cookies anyone?

I picked up this short story, which is related to the Descent series, without having read any of the other books. I have a couple of them on my Kindle but just haven't gotten around to reading them yet. I was looking for a Valentine's Day read and saw this one. I really liked the cover and decided to give it a whirl. I actually liked the story even though I wasn't familiar with the world or characters of this series. I didn't feel lost at all. There were a couple of references in the book that I did wonder about and probably would have appreciated more if I read the other books first, but I didn't feel I was missing anything major. The story flowed well, kept me guessing, and made want to read more of this world.

What I learned from this companion short story considering I'm not familiar with this series:

    - Elise is kick-ass and James is...well, not. That doesn't mean he is meek. He is the "witchy partner" in this duo and provides the magic to Elise's demon-hunting muscle. I'm sure there is more to it than that but hey, it was just a short story. I need more time to get to know this pair a little better.
    - No romance here, move along folks (but there is *something* going on between those two).
    - Elise seems to have some emotional demons of her own she is dealing with.
    - The Valentine's Day connection to this story is pretty loose, but I expected that.
    - I should expect some gory, bloody moments in the books for this series.
    - I have no idea what the book blurb means about James's butt needing to be slapped and how this story did that. I guess that is one of the things that went over my head because I haven't read the other books yet.
    - Don't accept home-baked goods from Elise (though now I'm jonesing for the recipe for Nutella cookies).
    - I want to read more of this series or at least the author's other series, which is probably more my style, but I'm definitely giving this one a shot.
