About the Author

Leigh Evans was born in Montreal, Québec but now lives in Southern Ontario with her husband. She's raised two kids, mothered three dogs, and herded a few cats. Incredible! Best book of the series!

It's been quite a rocky road for Hedi and Trowbridge. From the moment their paths recrossed in book 1 (The Trouble With Fate), it's been a steady stream of highs, lows, close calls and near-death experiences - and that was just the beginning! In The Problem With Promises, the series reaches new and crazy heights. It isn't just another book, it is THE book - the one we have all been waiting for.

Leigh Evans wastes no time throwing readers - and her characters - right back into the thick of things. Hedi and Trowbridge scarcely have a chance to catch their breath after the events of book 2 (The Thing About Weres) before they are once again up to their eyeballs in trouble. Forget downtime, and say goodbye to any fond dreams of cozying up in front of a fire enjoying a snuggle with your One True Thing. Hedi and Trowbridge have a date with destiny, and saying "no thanks, I'll take a raincheck" is not an option.

The action is non-stop. The danger is constant. EVERYTHING is on the line. EVERYONE is in danger. NO ONE is safe. It should have been utter chaos, but Leigh Evans doesn't skip a single beat. She deftly juggles all the different story elements to create what is, by far, her best book to date.

The shining star of Promises is undoubtedly Hedi. Her mouse-hearted days are officially over. She's tired of being caught in a tug of war between her Fae and her wolf, and she's had enough of this whole "knocked down, pushed around" business. After two books of abuse and self-doubt, she's finally digging her heels in, raising a defiant finger to fate, Karma, and all her naysayers, and taking a stand not only for herself, but for those she loves. I always knew she had it in her, but to actually see it happen on the page was so intensely satisfying, on so many levels, that even now, just thinking about it gives me chills. I was so damn proud of her! She's come such a long way as a character and it's been absolutely amazing making this journey with her. "Hedi rules", indeed!

And then there's Trowbridge. Oh, my darling Trowbridge! There's a reason he's my favorite alpha male werewolf, and in Promises, his awesomeness is on full display. Not only does he consistently show Hedi how much he loves, understands and appreciates her, exactly as she is, he makes sure everyone else gets the same message. There's a key scene near the halfway point when he growls out, "She is my mate. My. Mate." That one impassioned, powerful statement says it all. Because Trowbridge isn't just Hedi's One True Thing. She is his as well, and he'll do anything in his considerable power to protect and keep her safe.

All the action didn't leave much time for romance, but what moments there were, really counted. I had no trouble meeting my swoon quota, and I experienced many sigh-worthy moments when all I wanted to do was take a break so I could bask in the glow of what I'd just read. I didn't take a break, of course, and you won't want to either. You'll be so caught up in everything that's happening, you'll find any excuse to keep reading, because you simply MUST know what happens next.

Out of all the books in the series, this one was the most emotional for me. When my heart wasn't pounding from all the adrenaline and excitement, it was being tugged, squeezed, and sometimes outright pummeled by what seemed like an entire army of feels. It was fabulous and made me love the series - and the characters - even more.

The Problem With Promises did everything right. It pushed the action envelope, it gave the characters room to grow and shine, and most of all, it perfectly set us up for what is certain to be a dynamic and thrilling series finale.

The Best Mystwalker Book Yet!

This third installment in Evans Mystwalker really takes the series to a whole new level. The first two, while good and interesting, were a little bogged down with world building and character development. So jumping into Promises I was excited to see where the story went. And I certainly wasn't let down.

We pick up just a few hours after the end of the last book. S*** had just hit, and kept hitting, the fan and Hedi and Trowbridge certainly have some issues to work through. I was really hoping, after everything, that they would catch a small break. Because they have been through the wringer. Every time it seemed like they would get some peace and quiet ... BAM!

I guess Hedi finally reached her breaking point. She grew as a character and a person, and finally, FINALLY, stood up for herself, and didn't rely on others to save the day. She really kicked ass and didn't care enough to take names. I am firmly on team Hedi. I want everything for her, and while I know she will have to work for it some more, I think (hope!) Evans makes her happy.

And Trowbride certainly makes her happy. Her "One True Thing" in this world, the world she has spent many years hiding from, the world that keeps kicking her when she is down. The romance was always clear on her side of things, but for me it wasn't clear on Trowbridge's side of things ... until Promises. There is a scene near the end that really seals the deal for me. I was excited to see the growth of their budding relationship and that they are apparently on the same page now, that their situation is more than either one of them can handle on their own.

And the ending, it is pretty epic and satisfying, at least for me it was! It certainly wraps up Promises, leaving you wanting for the next book, and still managed to leave me with a feeling of completion and contentment at the end. I am super excited to see how they move forward over the next million obstacles now that they have both put on their big kid pants! Anyone who has liked the first two Mystwalker books will love Promises, and if you haven't started them yet, they are well worth the journey.

The "Mystwalker Series" is a excellent series to read. Its a sexy love story. Throw in werewolves and fae and it becomes even better. Its steamy and sex. Add some violence to all that, and its something you can't put down. Hedi says Robson is "My One True Thing." And he says Hedi is his "Tink."
Read the series. I dare you. I guaranty you that you won't be able to put them down to the end.

A must-read, if you are thinking of working on Wall St

I worked for CSFB for three years, and am still in investment banking for a smaller firm. So I have seen a part of the world that is described here. I'm not saying that this is an exact description of what I saw, because Lewis picks the most exotic creatures that he met, but the atmosphere is perfectly conveyed. This book will tell you all the stuff that they don't teach you in an interview or recruitment visit - the pecking order, the politics, and how to get paid.
The other reason to read this is that Lewis is a brilliant writer, with a real talent for describing people and their situations. Lots of other people have written boring books with the same raw material. For a non-specialist like my mother, the technicalities were hard work, but you don't need a lot of special knowledge to like this book. My mother certainly did.
Probably the best way to look at this book is like a travel book - you're not visiting a country, you're visiting a world. Great travel books are not word-perfect descriptions of a place, they are representations of what the author felt like when he was there, and they give the reader a feeling of what it was like to be there. If you read this book, you will understand what it feels like to work inside a big bank, and you'll enjoy the ride, even if you have no interest in actually working there.

One hand, one million dollars, no tears.

In the 1980's, Michael Lewis was a neophyte bond salesman for Salomon Brothers in New York and London for four years. Liar's Poker is a high-stakes game the traders, salesmen, and executives play each afternoon, but it is also a metaphor for the Salomon culture of extreme risk-taking with immediate payoffs and clear winners and losers.
This is the story of how Lewis survived the training program, inept but mean-spirited management, an aborted take-over even featuring a white knight, layoffs and the 1987 market crash before quitting to find his real calling as a business journalist. While Lewis's career did not take off quickly, he eventually became a highly paid producer, although not in the league of the true top dogs.
Lewis tells the real story of Wall Street in both go-go and crash days with self-deprecating humor enlivened with his ecletic wit. Colorful and well-known Wall Street characters appear such as Michael Milken, Lazlo Birini, Warren Buffett, Bill Simon, Sr. and John Guetfruend. All business students need to read this as even those with advanced degrees in finance such as myself, will learn how things really work. The story of how the junk bond and collateralized mortgage backed security markets emerge is told to fill in a chapter in financial history. Perhaps most interesting is some of the political machinations, rampant at Salomon, which lead for example for Salomon to ignore the junk bond market, allowing others to flourish and eventually attempt to take-over Salomon using junk bonds.
Lewis also describes for all investors the conflicts of interest and lack of governance on Wall Street long before Eliot Spitzer and Arthur Levitt became the champions of the little guy. My next step is to read Lewis's later books.

Entertaining for awhile; falls off near the end...

Liar's Poker is a funny look at life on Wall Street; especially the life of lower-level employees getting their start in the financial world. Michael Lewis uses the personal experience of his financial career in the Salomon Brothers bond program to tell the larger story of the rise and fall of the entire firm during the 1980s. Along the way he tells some funny stories and gives the reader an interesting, inside look at the fast-paced life on Wall Street. But in the end, the book starts to drag and Lewis's cynical view of the securities industry begins to get tiresome. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what a trader's life is like inside a major Wall Street firm. It is an interesting, initially humorous read that is appropriately not much longer than 200 pages in length.

I would recommend if in school to ask professor if their alright ...

Very well written book. The one thing I regret was buying the hardcover vs the paperback people in my class bought the paperback and the only issue or difference we found between the two was that the pages were 7 pages different. So if hardcover had something on page 30 it was on 37 I'm the paperback. I would recommend if in school to ask professor if their alright with you buying the paper back. It will save you a bit of money.

Grammatical Errors Galore

It surprises me that a marketing collegiate text book has so many grammatical errors. Especially when the introduction claims that "every page has been poured over to provide the most up to date research and business articles for educational purposes." Walmart is spelled Wahnart, etc. Through the whole book. While the book is clearly organized, sometimes the grammatical mistakes deter from the flow of reading, making the study process aggravating at times. And while this is a marketing book for a marketing course, it seems more like an excuse to market TO YOU.

Well written Marking book which includes many useful real world examples

This is the latest edition of the Principles of Marketing textbook and is used for an introductory undergraduate or graduate course. It's clearly written and includes lots of fresh, up-to-date, illustrative real-world examples to prove their theories and statements. Each chapter is filled with key terms used in the real world and the definitions can be found in the margins. The terms are also explained by the author's words as well as live examples. The end-of-chapter questions and case studies are also a very good reference and provide a way to test yourself on the content shared within the chapters. Also included in the chapters are many helpful charts, tables, and photos.

During my course I found this to be a very helpful book and believe that the content that is covered will help me while I continue to chase my professional goals and dreams.

I had the opportunity to study under Dr. Fallin at the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, AL. The material covered in his book is highly informative and accurate. I try not to think of that morning in May of this year of 1851. It is muddled in my brain anyway, maybe because I choose to leave it muddled. I did not see it all, I tell myself. I was upstairs in my room in our rambling white farmhouse, sent upstairs by Papa because I sassed Aunt Susan Elizabeth. She was Papa’s aunt, getting on in years and in grouchiness.
�
�� She drove me to distraction and I would have given anything to be away from her, from that house, yes, even from Papa, who had few words of cheerfulness for me since the day I was born and fewer yet since he’d become involved with his abolitionist doings, which seemed like forever now.
�
�� He went about those doings with an obsession.
�
�� There was always a quilt on the front wooden fence to show we were a safe house for runaways. I know because I put them there for Aunt Susan Elizabeth.
�
�� We had five of those quilts, and the ones on the fence were constantly changed.
�
�� The quilts said things.
�
�� Each one had a different message. What, I don’t know because I could never quite learn the differences. It had to do with the square knots left visible on the front, which Aunt Susan Elizabeth said was usually the sign of shoddy workmanship.

�� But not with these quilts. These square knots were left on the front on purpose.
�
�� The quilts each had a set number of square knots. She must have explained to me a dozen times the many things those knots meant. But I never got it. Which made her call me “dense.”

�� I hated those quilts because I was always having to work on one. That morning I was working on a wagon wheel pattern, which Aunt Susan Elizabeth said signaled the slaves to pack everything that would go into a wagon or that could be used in transit.

�� “Why can’t they just be told?” I asked her. It wasn’t so much the words I said as how I said them.
�
�� That’s when Papa sent me to my room.
�
�� “No soul,” he said to me, “you’ve got no soul. For this your mother gave her life when you were born. No soul.”

�� He’d been saying a lot of things like that to me lately, because I refused to get involved with his abolitionist doings. I couldn’t understand him risking his life for all those negroes who came to our door in the middle of the night looking like something the cat dragged in. �
�� Two nights before he’d taken in two runaways from the Harris plantation in Buckstown, Maryland, a state part slave and part free.
�
�� They’d had enough of old Mr. Josiah Harris’s cruelty.
�
�� We live in the small town of Christiana, Pennsylvania, on the Maryland border. My name is Cecelia McGill. Papa’s name is John. Runaway negroes know we’re a station on the Underground Railroad.

�� It was a bright morning, about ten o’clock. I was sitting on my bed, wondering how long I’d have to stay there, when I heard horses ride up. I went to look out the window.
�
�� It was Mr. Harris and he had his two mangy sons with him. I pushed the window open so I could hear. Harris was waving around a paper, which apparently was some kind of a writ. “Signed under the new Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, McGill,” I heard him yell. “Gives me the right to cross over into another state and pursue and take back the runaways.”

�� My father said something; I didn’t hear what. The Harrises got off their horses and headed for the house. I heard my father tell them to wait outside, then he must have come in and gone to the secret hiding place under the parlor and brought the slaves up, because he’s nothing if not a law-abiding man, my father. He brought them outside.

�� Then more men rode up. I recognized the Wallers, Quakers from the area. More trouble. I don’t know why people have to force their beliefs on everybody else, why they just can’t practice them and leave others alone.

�� Right off the Quakers started with the thees and thous, challenging the legality of the whole thing. An argument started. It got loud. Soon there was pushing and shoving. One of the Harrises ?red his gun in the air. The horses jumped and got antsy. Then more guns went off.

And of a sudden I saw my papa fall on the ground and the Harrises mount their horses and gallop away and the Quakers mount their horses, and for all their thees and thous pay no attention to my father but take the slaves on the horses behind them and whisk them off. Likely in the direction of the next safe house and on to Canada.

When CeCe McGill's father gets killed, Cece just wants
everything to be a bad dream. With her mother dead, too,
CeCe needs someone to take care of her. All of a sudden, a
man who claims to be her uncle comes to take CeCe in. CeCe
has heard many stories about this man and not all of them
are good. CeCe agrees to live with Uncle Alex, but with
hesitation. CeCe finds herself whisked away in an adventure
of a lifetime. Being a famous bird watcher and painter,
Uncle Alex uses this profession to get into plantations in
the South where he ends up freeing slaves. Uncle Alex brings
along his assistant, a student at Oberlin College and a
former slave, but CeCe doesn't seem to get along with her
very well. When CeCe has to save her and sees how terrible
slavery is, it changes her forever.

This book is thebest historical fiction book I have ever read!
The author,Ann Rinaldi, does a fantastic job of making you feel like
you were part of the story, sitting right by CeCe and Uncle
Alex. I loved the characters that the author created,
especially warm-hearted Uncle Alex. The way that the author
talked about slavery really moved me. It made me think
differently about life back then. I could not put the book
down, and I was intrigued with the story even when there was
only background information. I think that the author ended
the book well without leaving you wondering about what
really happened to the characters. If you like historical
fiction, you won't want to put down The Ever-After
Bird.

If he hadn't been determined to help runaway slaves, he would still be alive. That's why CeCe McGill hates abolitionists. Her father devoted his life and their home to giving aid as part of the Underground Railroad, but it was also what ended his own life when he was shot. His death left CeCe an orphan.

When CeCe's uncle, a doctor and an artist, arrives after her father's death, she is nervous about leaving the only home she's ever known to live with him in Ohio. It doesn't take long for her to realize he has a kind and gentle soul. So why is it a surprise when she learns he is an abolitionist just like her late father?

The difference is that CeCe finds herself more directly involved in the abolitionist movement. Uncle Alex and his assistant, a young, black college student, are planning a trip to the South. Uncle Alex wants to study rare birds, and his assistant wants to research the institution of slavery for her studies at Oberlin College. CeCe is invited along for the adventure.

The three travelers must adhere to the behaviors and customs of the South. Uncle Alex's assistant, Earline, will be assuming the role of slave, and CeCe and her uncle must act in character as her owner and mistress. If they are discovered, the punishment could result in death. CeCe is well aware that her uncle will be doing more than just searching for the scarlet ibis know as the Ever-After bird. He will also be helping point slaves in the direction of freedom.

CeCe's adventure is filled with educational opportunities as she learns about the world of rare birds and the workings of slavery. She sees the hope of freedom, but it is often colored with the tragedy of abusive treatment and even death. All she hopes is that they survive and, in some small way, make the world a better place.

Ann Rinaldi is well known for her historical fiction. THE EVER-AFTER BIRD paints a unique picture of slavery in the South, and the fight fought by brave individuals who wanted to see its end. Her descriptions compare the gentle refinement of the South with the startling reality of life behind the grand plantation houses and blooming magnolia bushes.

Age discrepancy

One of Rinaldi's better recent efforts. A somewhat transparent look at the evils of slavery, but a convincing one. My biggest problem about this book was that the main character, CeCe, was said to be 13-going-on-14, but was treated throughout the book at much younger. Especially when dealing with a time period when childhood was much shorter than we're accustomed to, it seemed odd that a girl of that age would be treated as needing so much protection. Other than that, the book seemed realistic and would definitely be good for middle school-age children to learn about slavery. And, of course, I loved all the references to Oberlin!
