Historian Richard H. Triebe calls the battle of Fort Fisher, North Carolina, one of the last major engagements of the American Civil War. Federal General Ulysses S. Grant realized he could bring the war to an early conclusion by closing this vital harbor. To seal off Wilmington from the outside world, he had to capture Fort Fisher first. This was no easy task since Fort Fisher was the largest earthen fortification in the Confederacy and was armed with 44 heavy seacoast artillery pieces. In December 1864, and again in January 1865, the United States Army and Navy launched a campaign to close this seaport and end blockade running forever.
Richard H. Triebe's book not only describes these dramatic battles in detail, but goes beyond other historical accounts by following the Fort Fisher prisoners to Elmira Prisoner of War Camp. Triebe researched each prisoner's record at the National Archives and discovered an astounding 46 percent of these men died from disease within five months. Join the author as he explores the causes that led to such a high death rate and find out who were the men responsible for creating such an unhealthy prison environment. Also included are prisoner's statements, statistics regarding the Fort Fisher prisoners and a complete roster of the soldiers captured that were sent to Elmira Prisoner of War Camp.

Story of an Important Civil War Battle

This book is a very good story of the fall of Ft. Fisher,NC and the subsequent
treatment of the Confederate soldiers captured there and taken to the Elmira Federal Prison in Elmira, NY.

The first part of the book is devoted to a detailed description of the battle.
The middle section gives first hand descriptions of the treatment of the soldiers
at Elmira including reports, letters, diaries, etc. The latter part of the book
contains a comprehensive roster of the prisoners. Also included is a thorough
bibliography.

Ft. Fisher was a very inportant but under reported battle of the Civil War. The
author does a good job of enlightening the reader about the battle and the treatment of the prisoners at the Elmira Prison which had a mortatlity rate of
24%.

If You Had Ancestors Who Served in the Military around Wilmington, NC, this book is a must!

I'll give this book five stars because it fills a hole in history and provides for a comfortable read on a difficult historical topic. In my case, it tells the overall story of the days leading up to my 4th-great grandfather's capture as a POW and death in the Elmira Prison Camp three weeks after his capture. Richard Triebe takes time to tell the story, then shares first-hand accounts offered by Fort Fisher POWs that he uncovered in his research. A nice touch is the listing of all the soldiers captured with the fall of Fort Fisher in Jan. 15, 1865 - many of these men are unknown to their modern-day relatives.

Thanks to Richard Triebe, I can envision how everything went down at both Fort Fisher and Elmira Prison.

Great Book!

I purchased this book "Fort Fisher To Elmira" and found that I had trouble putting it down! I have had an interest in Fort Fisher for several years due to the fact that my gg-grandfather and his two brothers enlisted in the Confederate Army in nearby Bladen County and were stationed at Fort Fisher together. All three were all captured by the Union forces with the fall of Fort Fisher and sent to Elmira as documented in this book. One brother died there and was buried in the prison graveyard; the other brother was returned back to James River, Va where he was exchanged, probably due to his poor health from the prison. My gg-grandfather endured the atrocities of Elmira and I was pleased to see his records and those of his brothers in this book along with the other 515 Confederate soldiers who fought there. Not only does Richard Triebe outline the history of Fort Fisher but he tells it through an insight into the lives of those brave men who fought there, were captured and, like my gg-grandfather and his two brothers, were sent to Elmira Prison to endure the atrocities. I learned many things from this book about what my relatives endured but also about life in the fort, prisoner of war processing, and prisoner of war exchanges. I recommend it to any Civil War buff!

A superb scholarly literary reference (but a bit dated)

This book is filled with ancient and classical literary references and catalog designations of the stars. At the price, it's an outstanding bargain. Greek, Latin, Persian, Arabic, Chinese, and European lore are all there. I think it's a"must have" for anyone interested in historical astronomy.
The book loses 1 star because the original text was written in 1895: before the constellation names and boundaries were fixed by the International Astronomical Union in 1930. So a beginner could get confused by references to a star being in one constellation whereas the IAU put the star in another.

In this powerful new collection, the noted poet, essayist and fiction writer returns to Port William, Ky., the fictional town introduced in The Wild Birds. Berry's narrator roams easily through the town's past 100 years, remarking early in the book that even the unknown past is present in us, its silence as persistent as a ringing in the ears. Birth, life, death and the primary institutions of family and community are the axes on which the stories turn. Their plots are as slender as fence posts: a soldier walks home at war's end; a young woman with a mild fever ponders her first years of marriage; a taciturn farmer takes his moribund father out of a hospital's intensive care unit so the old man can die with dignity. But Berry invests them with intense feeling, using the plain language of a largely oral culture, building metaphors and similes that have the clear ring of folk wisdom. His ground's-eye view of events can be chilling, as when he sums up World War II as a great tearing apart. If the stories seem somber in their emphasis on loss, the pains are clearly leavened by the comforts of community and connectedness that a small town can provide. An excellent introduction to one of America's finest prose writers.

In these five interrelated stories, Berry focuses once again on the fictional town of Port William and on characters like Andrew Catlett, the central figure of his novel The Remembering ( LJ 11/15/88). Each story dramatizes an individual crisis but also emphasizes an abiding sense of community and the simple but solid agrarian values that sustain it. In "Pray Without Ceasing," for example, these values prevail over a primitive desire for vengeance. In "Making It Home," they provide renewed strength for a soldier as he returns from the carnage of war. In "A Jonquil for Mary Penn," a young bride from a higher social class accommodates herself to these values and finds solace in them. Although the title story is sometimes melodramatic and preachy, Berry's tales are usually engaging and display a quiet but powerful dignity.

Made me weep

The title story touched me as no story has before or since. A son behaves intimately and unlawfully with his father during the days of his death. With the son we confront stupid laws and unfeeling bureaucracy and, in the end, vital community. The poignancy of the secret burial made me weep. How the son acts out his values with fidelity and grace is a story for all to learn from and be inspired. This is horror made beautiful. Berry's writing here is beyond criticism. Read this book and be renewed.

profound and beautiful

These have been among my favorite of Wendell Berry's short stories since the early 1990s. Like all of his writing about the Port William membership, these develop the characters of individuals in whom I see traits that are familiar in me or in people I know. The goodness, or the weakness and darkness, of these characters are written about in a way that causes me to reflect on my own connections with the human community and also with the earth on which we all live. Beautiful, uplifting, hopeful, and sad all at the same time, they are stories which I read when I want to feel rooted and connected again.

Wendell Berry is a great writer. I also read another of his books at the same time, Memories of Old Jack. I was so emotionally moved by his first story in this book that I had tears in my eyes.

Fascinante y controvertido

Este libro es fascinante. Robert Sepehr entreteje maravillosamente los hechos cient�ficos actuales con los viejos mitos, y se atreve a abordar lo que la academia simplemente se niega a enfrentar, como el hecho pol�mico de que somos, de hecho, una especie h�brida. Robert lo demuestra explicando los nuevos hallazgos en el genoma humano y el registro arqueol�gico en un formato f�cil de entender, sin embargo, de manera sofisticada. Aborda tambi�n el enigma de la sangre con Rh negativo. Me encant� todo lo relacionado con la Atl�ntida, y la explicaci�n completa de la expansi�n de la civilizaci�n en cada continente. Este libro ha sido muy bien documentado, muy informativo y muy bien presentado.

I was initially reluctant to read yet another young adult series because they all seem to fall into the same category of boring lately. However, I got the 1st book in the series for free and said to myself, what the hay. I am thrilled to say I could not put it down and was very upset that it had ended. I clicked on my trusty Amazon link, typed in the author's name and the rest is history. I love the characters and the way they seem to grow and mature with each book. There is some violence and I found my eyes watering a few times when characters passed that I had grown to like. I purchased all of the books that were available in a two day period. Now I have a bunch of ebooks waiting for me to read. I guess you are wondering why I have not given any names or even hinted at the plots? Well, I want you to read for yourself. I hate book reviews that practically tell the who story like a mini version of cliff notes so I refuse to do it. Just read them!

The Complete Katon University Series

Wonderful series. Having all the books together keeps the continuity of the story flowing. The characters are well rounded and interesting. You find yourself experiencing their emotions as though you were there and rooting for them to suceed. These are people I would like to have as my friends. The story grabs you and will not let go - you have to find out what happens next. I look forward to reading more about the main characters as I understand they are also in the upcoming series 'Mosaic'.

but I am so glad I did

I have not read a lot of YA Fiction. When I read the first book of this series I wanted to read more about the characters. I'm not sure how or where I heard from Andrea Pearson's books, but I am so glad I did. The story did not disappoint me, on the contrary I love it. I love the characters, how the story develops and how they grow to become stronger in their magical powers, the strong friendship they have and the kind of YA they become throughout all the books. After I finished book 5 (Reclaim) I wanted to read more about Nicole and Austin. I love it!!!! Thanks Andrea!!!!
