About the Author
Emily Crawford is a lecturer and Director of the Sydney Centre for International Law (SCIL). She teaches international law and international humanitarian law, and has delivered lectures both locally and overseas on international humanitarian law issues, including the training of military personnel.

Alison Pert lectures at the University of Sydney in international law, specialising in the use of force and international humanitarian law. She is a qualified barrister and has practised as a lawyer in government and the private sector in London, Papua New Guinea and Australia. She has represented Australia at international organisations including Unidroit and UNCITRAL, and in treaty negotiations.

My Introduction...

This book discusses the art of the Japanese folding screen using the 23 screens in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London & the Ashmoleon Museum in Oxford. In the 23-page introduction, the author gives a brief history of painted screens & a look at some of the conventions of their use & interpretation. He also briefly discusses the major painters & their schools. The rest of this slim volume is devoted to color reproductions of ALL the screens, with commentary explaining the subject matter & stylistic features.

A few years ago I decided I would, just for fun, learn something about Japanese screens. I began with THIS book & Masterpieces of Japanese Screen Painting: The American Collections. From this book I learned the function of folding screens in Japanese architecture & the best vantage point for viewing them. Rather than standing up, a kneeling position seated on one's feet is the customary position for viewing the screen. From that point of view, the center of the screen is at eye-level. On p. 13 Impey discusses the system of vertical perspective that is common in screen paintings--a scene is viewed as if climbing a ladder & looking down. The screens in this book present a variety of subjects: many-figured genre scenes, illustrations of traditional literary stories, landscapes, flowers, & animals.

P.S. I can also recommend Designing Nature: The Rinpa Aesthetic in Japanese Art (Metropolitan Museum of Art) and Beyond Golden Clouds: Japanese Screens from the Art Institute of Chicago and the Saint Louis Art Museum.

Like children with other learning differences, gifted children often need specialized curriculum and support in order to achieve academic and social success throughout their school experiences. Gifted children have exceptional abilities in one or more learning domains (e.g., mathematics, music, athletics). Without coaching or special support these children may become bored or frustrated with school. They may develop poor work and study habits. Gifted students may feel out of place with same-age peers, seeking friendships with older children who share their interests. Early enrichment and intervention is important in order to set learning patterns for any child with special abilities or needs. Early identification can make a significant difference to a child who is a gifted learner.

The Gifted and Talented Series by Gifted Games (Gateway Gifted Resources) helps prepare young children for Gifted and Talented testing (NNAT2, OLSAT, and COGAT). These fun workbooks are developmentally appropriate for young children and offer practice opportunities for testing in reasoning, problem solving, and cognitive tasks. To keep children motivated and make learning fun, the test prep books use a detective theme “Gifted Detective Agency” as an incentive to finish the workbooks.

Each workbook targets one or more TAG tests. The workbooks have 5 parts, each designed to prepare a young child for gifted and talented tests.

Review of Gifted and Talented Series Workbook for the OLSAT, COGAT, NNAT2:

The workbook is a fun and valuable resource to prepare preschool and kindergarten children for talented and gifted tests (OLSAT, COGAT, NNAT2). The workbook questions are designed (patterns, figures, shapes, and colors) to simulate the test taking experience. In addition to the practice tests, this book is a valuable resource for parents embarking on TAG testing for their children. The introduction provides descriptions of the different TAG tests and notes on developmental practices in test taking for young children. For example, on some tests preschool children will not have to fill in the answer bubble, they may be asked to point to it. The introduction also provides test taking tips to help parents make test taking fun and relaxing for their child.

As a parent and an educator I highly recommend this Gifted and Talented Series Workbook. While testing young children can sometimes be controversial, it is critical to identify any child who is in need of specialized curriculum. Sometimes talented and gifted children are overlooked and that can negatively impact academic and social experiences. The Gifted and Talented Test Preparation Book is fun and may reduce test taking stress.

This is a great book for g&t test preparation. My soon-to-be 5 year-old grandson was really interested in it. The very bright, colorful design appeals to kids his age, and we found the exercises fun and challenging.

Excellent And Fun Test Prep Workbook

Gifted children are often bored and frustrated in a regular level classroom. They may exhibit difficult behavior and not relate well to the other children. In a classroom with other gifted children, they will be happier and develop their intellect to even greater levels.

Gateway Gifted Resources has developed this terrific workbook to help prepare your child for the OLSAT, COGAT and NNAT2 tests to determine whether your child is a candidate for a gifted level curriculum. This workbook is geared for children in the preschool and kindergarten levels.

Children need to learn to follow directions, learn to be focused and listen carefully. Parents should work with their children so they understand how to approach the questions. Questions are easy at first in order to build confidence.

The format is colorful, cute and all-around kid-friendly.

Practice questions for all three of the tests are towards the back of the workbook.
There is an answer keys and directions section for parents there, as well.

Children who finish the workbook will become members of the Gifted Detective Agency and will be awarded a personal certificate. What fun!

MSKUS Has a NEW difining text.

I own the first addition and it was good. The DVD was a real value. I own every credible text on this subject. This one rocks the socks off of the previous texts. I still do hold Bianchi as the BIBLE, but this edition has passed Jacobson for diagrams and images. A Strong Case for the new defining text for MSKUS imaging learning. Well done!!

Maybe the best MSK book to date

Maybe the best MSK book to date. I have most of the major books out there but this one is the best in my opinion. Not the most comprehensive one out there (that would be the Stephano Bianchi book) but still excellent. Very good text, images, and included needle techniques. A tad expensive when I bought it but heard the price has come down recently.

A novella by Peter Straub

This novella, a rumination on the nature of evil, as often with Peter Straub, is in fact a chapter from The Skylark removed while editing a Dark Matter. What I wanted to say is that there is no need to read A Dark Matter to enjoy this novella. It gives more details about the childhood of a serial killer. As usual with Peter Straub, it's very well written. Well, it depends what you're looking for. But as a dark tale, it's a gem! Thanks Peter Straub for writing so well. Enjoy!

Gripping, draws you in and doesn't let go!

I actually read this before "A Dark Matter". If you enjoy Straub, you will enjoy this. Straub does not tie up all the loose ends in most of his works, and this is no exception. If you are a reader that prefers nice, clean, tied-up endings, you may be disappointed with "A Special Place". "A Special Place" is a snapshot, rather than the movie that novels are. That being said, it is extremely well-written. The main characters are well-developed and are consistent throughout both books. The peripheral characters are outlined, but readers don't get to know them well.
Some have called "A Special Place" a study of the nature of evil. I don't agree. There are several non-fiction texts that do a much better job. Evil is not fictitious, so the study of it doesn't belong in the fiction category. "A Special Place" more accurately chronicles the nurturing and development of evil-which, to me, is infinitely more interesting.

Dark Hearts, Twisted Souls

Surgically removed from Peter Straub's novel A DARK MATTER and given life on its own as a novella, A SPECIAL PLACE is a disturbing glance down a lonely corridor to the darkest chamber of the human heart. This isn't a place you want to spend much time, lest the matter-of-fact evil rub off on you and taint your spirit. The gripping narrative is fascinating and that fascination may disturb you and raise uncomfortable questions about yourself. In other words, Straub deftly draws you into the story with little fanfare and leaves you to find your own way out.

Uncle Till is "a satyr, a faun, a devil" and a serial killer with a passion for torture. Nephew Keith Hayward is already well on his twisted way to becoming the fullblown sociopath we see in the novel A DARK MATTER. Uncle Till provides the knife and the inspiration, and Keith simply follows his heart. The centerpiece of horror is the "gift" the boy gives his uncle, and if you've already read A DARK MATTER, then you know what that gift will be, but that won't lessen the coldblooded horror of the act. (The novella deepens Keith Hayward's seemingly selfless act near the end of A DARK MATTER.)

In short, A SPECIAL PLACE is a good place to go if you want to be creeped out by Straub, streamlined and cutting to the bone with a few short strokes.

At times bordering on a prose poem, this dense, kaleidoscopic novel by Zimbabwean author Vera (Butterfly Burning) is set against the civil war that ravaged her country in the early 1980s, shortly after Zimbabwe won its independence from Britain. The story takes place largely in the rural outpost of Kezi, a small hamlet of mud huts 200 kilometers away from the city of Bulawayo. The heart of Kezi is Thandabantu Store, one of the few commercial establishments, site of the bus stop and Kezi's only phone booth (which has neither wires nor handset), and the town's unofficial gathering place. Here a young woman named Thenjiwe meets a worldly museum curator from Bulawayo and begins a tentative affair. The civil war intrudes, however. Caught up in the orgiastic killing frenzy, a soldier named Sibaso murders Thenjiwe and rapes and mutilates her sister Nonceba. Thandabantu Store is destroyed in a final conflagration, but Nonceba finds her way to Bulawayo and takes shelter with Thenjiwe's former lover, offering a pallid ray of hope. The story shifts between the perspectives of Thenjiwe, Nonceba and Sibaso. Vera's impressionistic writing can make it difficult to grasp the political context and chronology of the war, but it perfectly captures the terrifying chaos of the fighting, as well as the rhythms of provincial African life ("In truth, the bus drives from Bulawayo to Kezi.... But on the slim wooden plaque suspended next to the conductor's window, Kezi comes first, and in the minds of the residents of Kezi, of course, Kezi comes first: the bus, therefore, is seen as driving from Kezi to Bulawayo").

Tries a bit too hard

I found myself lost in some of the imagery in this book. Vera's sytle is indeed lyrical. The problem is that in places, she becomes so entangled in poetic imagery that the point of the scene is lost. I couldn't understand what was happening for pages at a time. Still, she successfully employs this technique throughout most of the book.

A STUNNING CREATION � MOVING AND POETIC

Yvonne Vera is an artist - a painter with words. The images she conjures, her amazing gifts to the reader, that grace the pages of this incredible novel, come straight from her soul - which is obviously filled with a deep love and compassion for her homeland, Zimbabwe, and its people. In these few pages (less than 200), she manages, through the related experiences, thoughts and emotions of her four main characters, to enlighten the world about the joyous/painful rebirth of Rhodesia into Zimbabwe, and to comment with cutting insight on forces as universal to all of humanity as love, hate, peace, war, kindness, unspeakable cruelty, and selfless, unconditional devotion.
She does all of this by utlizing language that is some of the most poetic and beautiful I have ever been blessed to read - her prose is by turns stark and loving, sheltering and illuminating, protective of what is fragile and precious, and unflinchingly revelatory about what is shameful and despicable. Her writing style varies so subtly as the story demands that it sometimes shifts imperceptably between long, graceful, sweeping word-strokes and choppy thought-bursts that could be described as literary pointillism. With some of the incomprehensible violence that occurs in this story, the beauty of Vera's writing is even more of a blessing - without, it would be a great temptation to turn away. That being said, there are also examples within of some of the most wonderful depths of the human spirit.
On the first level a story about the effect of the struggle for (and after) Independence on four people - two women, sisters; and two men, one compassionate and one a killing machine - the novel expands in depth to address multiple layers of human emotion and experience. In just one example, Vera's work here delves deeply and inspiringly into the types and purposes of memory - its coexisiting roles that aid us in understanding, protecting us, connecting us with our past and our environment, and healing us.
A word of warning, to those who might be tempted to mentally shelve this wondrous novel in `African fiction' - to do so will do a horrible disservice, not only to this author and her work, but to yourself. This is a novel that can - and should - be experienced by sensitive readers regardless of their ethnic or national background. It speaks to the universality of the human soul - I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Karate-do Nyumon literally means a passage through the gates of the Karate way--in other words, an introduction to the world of Karate. Karate-do Nyumon is the result of Master Funakoshi's wish to clarify Karate thought and practice for those who know nothing about it. It comprises unpublished writings from the years before his death in 1957, together with simplified kata--sequences of movements--synthesized by Funakoshi from the traditional Okinawa Karate-do kata, for beginners.


Master Funakoshi begins by exploding some of the myths of Karate: "Karate-do is a noble martial art, and the reader can rest assured that those who take pride in breaking boards or smashing tiles, or who boast of being able to perform outlandish feats like stripping flesh or plucking out ribs, really know nothing about karate. They are playing around in the leaves and branches of a great tree, without the slightest concept of the trunk."


In his description of what Karate is, the Master describes the history of Karate--its origins in the ancient methods of unarmed combat in China, and its growth as a fighting method in Okinawa, a country where arms were banned in a succession of decrees from the Japanese mainland. In order to prevent it being subjected to control, or more importantly, to prevent the Japanese overlords from knowing and using the techniques, the practice of Karate was kept a secret. To preserve this secrecy, the habit persisted until very recent times of keeping no records. Master Funakoshi, however, recognized in this book and others the need to formulate the kata precisely, so as to establish a standard of true Okinawan Karate. The kata in this book are not traditional kata, but they serve to establish the correct habits of stance, thought and action, and to facilitate the eventual mastery of the true Karate-do kata. All these special kata are clearly explained and illustrated by photos.


Lastly, Master Funakoshi recalls stories of men who were living legends when he was a youth in Okinawa, men whose reputations overcame even the secrecy that clung to Karate until the middle of this century.

About the Author
GICHIN FUNAKOSHI is world famous as one of Karate's great masters. Born in Shuri, Okinawa Prefecture, in 1868, he studied Karate-do from childhood and organized the first public demonstrations.


He was trained in the Confucian classics and was a schoolteacher early in life. After training for decades under the foremost masters in Okinawa he was elected president of the Okinawa Association for the Spirit of Martial Arts.


He was chosen to demonstrate Karate at the First National Athletic Exhibition in Tokyo in 1922, which led to the introduction of the ancient martial art to the rest of Japan and subsequently to the rest of the world. Among his writings are Karate-do: My Way of Life, Karate-do Kyohan: The Master Text, and Karate Jutsu: The Original Teachings of Gichin Funakoshi.


Master Gichin Funakoshi died in April 1957.

If a instructor, assistant, student who is very deep into karate do and is searching for some history and foundation of karate do shotokan this is the first book you should have or give as a gift. This book is very detailed about master Funakoshi instruction and his master's, if you are getting this book may I suggest Funakoshi's other book karate do kyohon also. If karate do changes your life this book also helps in a deeper look into karate do and what it does to an individual.

Very interesting. This book describes Kata in the form ...

Very interesting. This book describes Kata in the form of building body form and strength. It explains how to develop Ki (Chi) from the lower abdomen. (Dantian) By breathing and practicing the 10 No Kata, one can develop strength in fighting. Kata also develops a fighting form to remember so that one can master moves in combat. Without Kata, it would be hard to be a strong fighter and one will have hard time remembering and mastering fighting moves.

I have read many Funakoshi books... this book was was extremely interesting the Master talks about basics which are the foundation of every great Martial artist. I highly recommend this book for any martial Artists studying Karate..Funikoshi has a few other amazing books as well Karate d0 my way of life is truly a great book as well as the essence of Karate. this book is full of great examples and illustrations

Not Just What to Do but How

This book stands out in the following ways:

--It goes beyond trends, beyond the next superfood, for example, to "evergreen keys" which are timeless in their healthy effects
--it tells you not just what to change but how to make the change
--it gives you the right foods to eat, but also the practices that go with it, meaning how to make the mental shifts that will help you change
--instead of talking about the relationship between the mind vs. body, it goes from outside (body) to inside (core self) and how these layers are integrated
--it helps you find your "unique starting point," the right place to start, based on where your habits and lifestyle currently are.
--it helps you deal with setbacks
--how to deal with lack of time and money to make the changes
--using exercise as "ambition fuel" and not just a prerequisite for a healthy body
--writing, visualization, relaxation, meditation: how they can work for you
--finally, you're encouraged to sometimes "go beyond," to sometimes imagine meeting goals and intentions that are outside your current scope of practice, not only as inspiration, but to help shift your thinking

This is a book that can really help you get closer to your dream self and maybe even expand your idea of what that dream self can actually be. Can't recommend it enough.

Complete Mind Body Soul Insights and Practices

This book looks at all areas of health - beyond just the physical elements. Tova has extensive knowledge about food and the impact that eating has on your body and energy - it is like an encyclopedia where you can access all the information that you need about healthy eating.
Beyond that however, she takes it further and examines how our minds and mental programming affect our health.
Most importantly there are action steps and exercises that you can apply to change the way that you current body, mind and soul are showing up in the world and create a balanced interaction between all three.
This is complete healing from the inside out and highly recommended for anyone wishing to transform their health, energy and enjoyment of life.

Total transformation for the body, mind and soul.

Great Book!

I've read many books on nutrition and weigh loss over the years and must say that I think this one is great! I can relate to the authors straightforward and no-nonsense approach, and I appreciate the fact that it is a quick read. The message is simple, eat foods that make you feel good, eliminate foods that make you feel bad. Although this seems like an obvious message, I feel that this book sets itself apart by acknowledging that many people have emotional limitations that interfere with their ability to make better eating decisions. The book contains tips on how to deal with your overall state of well-being, and information about how certain ailments can be worsened or improved depending on which foods you are eating. All in all, I thought that this book was very practical and well-written: )

About the Author

Chetan Bhagat is the author of seven blockbuster books. These include six novels—Five Point Someone (2004), One Night @ the Call Center (2005), The 3 Mistakes of My Life (2008), 2 States (2009), Revolution 2020 (2011), Half Girlfriend (2014)—and the non-fiction title What Young India Wants (2012). Great story & fun read

I picked up this book while in India and quickly realized that I couldn't put it down. It is the story of three friends who are at IIT Delhi...who are all below average (five point something on a 10-pt GPA scale). They quickly bond after getting hazed (called ragging) and embark on a series of adventures involving life around Delhi, girls, and how to beat the IIT system before it beats them. A great read even if you didn't go to IIT Delhi!

Certified and approved - Authentic IIT

My first reservation when I picked up this book was whether the story and characters would be true to life on an IIT campus. My second reservation (having read a random page from the book) was whether I would be able to remain patient through the casual and colloquial writing style. The book well exceeded my expectations on both fronts. The characterization and writing style turned out to be strengths of the book.

What happens when you put together hundreds of completely different people who only have one thing in common - they have all mindlessly and goallessly topped their way through school to now live together away from their controlled environment for the first time. The sudden realization of mediocrity and the sudden freedom to choose how to live ones life brings out the best and worst in people. Reminiscing about life at IIT is most often about those stories about the bests and worsts of those people. This is one such story.

It is hard to guess if non-IITians would enjoy this book. Though, I can certainly say that all IIT undergrads who lived on campus would find it a thoroughly enjoyable read. The book is a shockingly honest narrative written by a guy with a unique sense of humor that I have come to associate with fellow IITians - cynical, crass, insensitive, asocial, lateral, imaginative, visual. Quick read. Funny plot. Very nostalgic. Can't wait to see the movie!

RELAX - Its all in fun!

I am a little surprised by the harsh reviews that some people are giving this book. Granted its not exactly a masterpiece but I dont think that was ever the author's intent (if I may say so myself). Its meant to be taken lightly, a few laughs and a tickle here and there is all it warrants. I think its a fun ride and anyone who has ever been to college in India will somewhere identify with it. As far as it being on top of the bestsellers in India, well, mediocrity has never been deprived of the top shelf, be it books, movies, cricket or politics. Enjoy the book!
