With another Dragon War looming and Errinton's oppressed rising against their leaders, will Seirsha betray her blood or turn her back on Rigel—the man she's loved her entire life?

Author's Note - This novel is darker than the previous two in the series and was written for a more mature audience. In writing this, I directly dealt with issues that the other novels only vaguely alluded to. The point of the story, however, is not the cancerous evil that has spread through the kingdom, but the light at the end of the tunnel--the hope in the darkness.

For my younger readers and for those looking for a lighter read, this novel can be skipped without worry of missing important elements needed for the fourth book.

Best of the series so far!

My kindle didn't even have time to cool in the time between when I finished book 2 and began book 3. I was very lucky that I just happened to start the series in the weeks before this was released so I didn't have to wait. Now the wait for the next one is going to be torture.

I thought I loved Galinor. I really thought Archer was the ultimate love interest. Neither of them holds a candle to Rigel. We get a glimpse of the kind of person he is when he saves the day in Pippa, but he is so much more. He is a king who doesn't think he can ever be king. He's in love with a girl he knows he can never have. He is the man everyone suspects of treason, who has no desire to commit the act.

This book is much darker than the first two and it gripped me from the beginning. It isn't merely a love story or a quest. It is about a kingdom that has fallen into ruin, in part because of it's cold king. It is about that Kingdom raising itself up, with the aid of some unlikely allies, to defeat the evil within its walls in hopes of regaining the greatness they once possessed.

I was pleasantly surprised to find Pippa and Archer having such prominent roles. I love them and they just added to the rich crop of characters. Seirsha plays the cold princess well but it is her bravery that makes all the difference. The love story in this book is more passionate than the other two. I like that we get to see them be in love, rather than just declaring their love at the end. We see the stolen kisses and gallant declarations.

We also see soooo much more of the dragons. What's not to like?

Mysteries of Errinton revealed :)

My favorite of the series! Kind of the big sister of the rest. A little bit darker (but the others kind of had no darkness, so still fun), Seirsha just had to deal with a lot more in life than the other girls especially considering none of her trials were her fault. The fantasy element was really upped in this book and I loved the role the dragons played. It was also fun to have Pippa back in the picture. Definitely sad the series is coming to a close....

This one is a bit darker, so I was hesitant to read it. However, I loved this book and I loved the two main characters as well. It wasn't as dark as I expected, either, but I might not recommend it to a young tween/teen.

Good Historiographical Essays

This modest collection of essays embodies the kind of work I love most: a master historian writing about the questions that interest him.

"The Irrepressible Conflict" stood out as the most convincing and thorough argument. Its subject is the inevitability of the Civil War and whether the North could have ended slavery through patience. Stampp dismantles the idea with aplomb.

"The Southern Road to Appomattox" promotes the idea that a lack of will killed the confederacy. Stampp places too much emphasis on guilt, but the idea of a lack of will was useful for other works, notably "Why the South Lost the Civil War".

The other essays are a mix of historiography and analysis of such questions as Lincoln's motivation in resupplying Fort Sumter, the use and misuse of psychology in assessing slaves, and the meaning of racism in the Republican Party.
