Directed to physicians as well as to instructors and students of the martial arts, this book discusses the various injuries that occur in karate, judo, jujitsu and kung fu.
The bulk of the book is written in everyday language. Medical terms are defined. Medical analyses of injuries, designed expressly for physicians, also are included and are set apart from the remainder of the text by a distinct typeface.
The authors begin the book with the results of a statistical survey of martial arts injuries. The mathematical analyses are presented in terms of raw figures, percentages and levels of statistical significance. The second chapter details types of injuries and their presentations, causes and management. Succeeding chapters each cover a particular part of the body. Chapter subheads are arranged in a decimal system for easy reference.
The Head explains injuries to the skull, brain, eyes, ears, nose and mouth.
The Neck includes information on cervical spine, neck muscle, and airway
injuries.
The Chest encompasses injuries to the ribs and sternum, lungs and heart.
The Abdomen offers sections on the abdominal wall, liver, spleen, intestines
and bladder.
The Back covers problems associated with the thoracic spine, lumbar spine,
back muscles and kidneys.
Upper Extremity considers the shoulder, arm, forearm, elbow, wrist, hand
and fingers.
Lower Extremity contains information on injuries to the hip, thigh, knee,
leg, ankle, foot and toes.
The Pelvis discusses injuries to the pelvic girdle.
The authors also provide information on cardiopulmonary resuscitation, list basic first aid equipment, give a partial compilation of weaponry sometimes involved in injuries, and present an anatomical chart of injuries.
Throughout the book, special efforts are made to convey an understanding of how and why martial arts injuries occur, how they can best be prevented, and how to select optimal emergency and comprehensive methods of treatment. The unique scope and presentation of the text contribute to the success of these efforts. The result is a book that will be indispensable both in the dojo and in the physician's office.

Review
This book represents a unique, innovative, and definitive study of medical injuries in the martial arts. It will serve as the standard of reference for students, instructors, and physicians who deal with the various medical aspects of the martial arts in the years to come. --Grandmaster Richard Chun
Medical studies of the martial arts have long been needed. This book represents a great step forward in specifically understanding the injuries and treatment of martial arts injuries. It should be of great assistance to sports physicians and dedicated practitioners of the martial arts. --Michael D. Roback, M.D.
This book is sorely needed at this time because of the rapid growth of the martial arts throughout the world. I would highly recommend it as required reading for anyone involved in judo and karate. It is a very clear guide to understanding the causes of injuries one might possibly encounter during practice or tournament competition. Athletes, coaches, and trainers should be totally familiar with the contents of this book and keep a copy handy as a daily guide to training, especially as a preventive measure. --Charles Merriman, 6th Dan Goju Ryu Karate Do Head Coach US/AA Karate Team

Complete but difficult
By EclecticBoy
Medical Injuries in the Martial Arts. What could be more useful? Not this book. Have a muscle strain? A "...frequent complaint in the martial arts"? No problem! Just note:
**"The posterior muscle mass is more commonly traumatized, and in severe cases, may be indistinguishable from ligamentous sprain or fracture. Therefore a history of the injury mechanism often obtainable from the the instructor and careful neurologic and radiographic examination may be required..." **
I picked this page at random. Really.
Of course you could say: "Neck strain is a common, and it's difficult to tell how serious it may be. You may want to get an X-ray and tell the ER doctor exactly how it happened so he could rule out nerve damage." But hey, where's the fun in that?
Oh wait: this book is supposed to be for the layman, perhaps the Sensei, to be familiar with possible injuries and quickly refer to them and advice on what to do next. Most every injury listed, regardless of how minor, is recommended to visit a doctor, get expensive tests, and is treated as if it were a major event. Therefore, there is no need for this book, as its own advice is to throw it out and visit the E.R.
Can it be useful? Sure. If you can translate the above passage without hesitation, and can walk-back with common sense how serious an injury may or may not be, and distinguish it from the dozen similar injuries listed. But it's not a quick first-aid guide. Nor a doctor's guide. Nor a guide on how people may be seriously injured by karate moves, either to cause or prevent them. Not sure what they're aiming for.
Complete and accurate. Readable, not over long, thus 3-stars. But make your own choice about the practicality of this guide in your dojo library.

Excellent
By .
After purchasing numerous books on potential injuries and preventitive measures, this book stands head and shoulders above the rest as an exceptional resource. It lists a variety of techniques used in martial arts and the resulting injuries and options to repair the body. It is logically broken down by body area (head, neck, etc.) and easy to follow and use. Whether you are a practitioner, Sensei or Doctor, you will find this information very very helpful. I highly recommend it.
