She had to be told to shave her legs and underarms, to use deodorant, and that there were guidelines about how to dress even in the "English" world. The reader feels her excitement when she finally gets a truck and learns how to drive it. She also learns that all English are not to be trusted when she is raped and didn't even know what had happened to her. The Amish don't tell their girls anything about sex or life in general, they learn it when they need to know it. Young Amish women are pitifully unprepared for life. About the Author
Emma Gingerich left her Amish community in Eagleville, Missouri, at the age of eighteen. She went to south Texas, close to South Padre Island, where she lived for almost four years. She received her Associates Degree at a community college and transferred to Tarleton State University located in Stephenville, Texas, to complete her Bachelor’s Degree. She is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in business administration. Though Emma works full-time as a Billing Coordinator in the healthcare industry and is continuing her college education, she still managed to write her first memoir. She is looking forward to writing a sequel. Education is important to Emma, and she is happy to have the opportunity to attend college. She hopes to help and inspire other Ex-Amish people to receive an education as well. Her passions are: writing, hiking, traveling, running and helping others.

This book is a true account of Swartentruber Amish traditions & their religion.

I'm posting the rating on the book as a former Swartzentruber Amish perspective: The book is a must read to learn the true traditional Swartzentruber Amish family daily lives. The moment I started reading the book, I was hooked. It explains the hardships of what a young girl goes through if she chooses to leave the Amish. It is a very well written book with no bad or demeaning language, so you can even let your teenagers read it. I recommend this book for anyone that wants to know or learn more about the Amish life and the struggles of starting a new life in the English world.

Incredible Determination!

I read it in one sitting, and was amazed by the courage of this slip of an 18 yr old girl with only an 8th grade education! Speaking primarily German, she ran away from the harshly restrictive and puzzling Amish world in hopes of a better life. With very little help, and knowing next to nothing about the "English", she continued to follow her dreams while being shamed and criticized by the only friends and family she had ever known.

Without a birth certificate, drivers license or any proof of identity, she had many roadblocks along the way. To make matters worse, she was a repeated crime victim. But, refusing to be thwarted, she worked to support herself, studied for her GED, then went on to college, where she is now working toward her graduate degree! I have read several books by Amish authors, but this one rings more true to life than any other I've read. I wish this very strong, intelligent, young author the very best life has to offer. BUY THIS BOOK! You won't regret it!

The Best Biography I've Ever Read

I can't believe no one has reviewed this book...so although I have never written one before here goes....

Critics say that this is the best book on the intensely private yet captivating Maria Callas. I'll go farther than that and say that it is the best biography I have personally EVER read and I am a huge fan of biographies. Yet, I can't quite put my finger on why its so good. Maybe its because Arianna Stassinopoulos shows a profound empathy for the diva or perhaps it's because she interviewed practically every living person who knew her. Maria Callas, the love interest of Aristotle Onassis who later dropped her for Jacqueline Kennedy, and of course the greatest dramatic opera singer who ever lived, is brought to life right in front of you in this fantastic, well ..... just read this book. You'll love it as much as I do.

I have not read any other biography on Callas, but I listen to her avidly (her La Wally aria is particularly addictive) and have her Tosca performance on DVD as well as the documentary Maria Callas: Life and Art. But Callas's music alone has always made me wonder about her. Such deeply mined emotions in her singing, such ferocity, such purity, such power. How does she get all these in her performances? Where does she mine them? Zefirelli has compared her to Michelangelo, Bernstein has called her the greatest artist in the world. This book answers these questions and explains why. I have to say that it is a compulsive page-turner, even now in the twenty-first century where opera is no longer mainstream. There's always something interesting in each page. At the same time the biographer doesn't belabor a particular episode or detail in Maria's life as to make it boring or overly dramatized. And Arianna Stassinopoulos is no Kitty Kelly: everything seems very well-researched and reliable.

I had never really liked Maria Callas as a singer, until I read Arianna Stassinopoulos/Huffington's' book "Maria Callas - the Woman Behind the Legend." It is a brilliantly researched, beautifully written and very moving book, and totally changed my perceptions of La Callas.
I realised why her voice had sounded hard on the complete recording of "Carmen" I have with her in the title role. She was such a superb stage performer, as well as a wonderful singer, that she played "Carmen" as a hard-bitten, promiscuous woman, and adapted her voice to match. Moreover the book chronicled the massive frustrations, uncertainty and unhappiness that Callas suffered, as a sad counter-balance to her phenomenal success as an opera performer - possibly the greatest dramatic soprano, ever!

The book, which I bought through Amazon, was in great condition, at a very reasonable price, and I will treasure it. It has added a new dimension and enjoyment to this old bloke's understanding of great music.

About the Author

Aviva Garrett has documented Juniper Networks technologies since joining the company as its first writer in 1997. She wrote the first JUNOS manuals and then oversaw the documentation as the company grew from a startup to an established network equipment provider. She recently stepped down as Juniper Networks' Director of Tech Pubs to pursue other writing and business assignments, such as this book. Prior to Juniper Networks, Aviva worked at Cisco Systems for six years. She also worked for Novell, Saber Technologies, Gavilan, and other technology companies and startups. She is the co-author of "Juniper Networks Field Guide and Reference" (2002, Addison-Wesley). Aviva is well-known in the networking industry and in networking list-serves and engineering circles.

An essential introduction

This book is a must-have for newcomers to JUNOS. It does not try to explain the theory behind the features being configured, but if you already know how to set up other kinds of routers and simply want to know how to do the same thing on JUNOS, this is the right book to have. The focus on examples versus tutorial information works well, but there is still enough background material to help understand JUNOS-specific features "by accident."

Great reference for even JUNOS experts

Even though you've been configuring or operating Juniper routers for long time and you think you are familiar enough with JUNOS, you'll still learn something you don't know from this book; the "Problem/Solution/Discussion/See Also" structure helps to quickly find and read the exact information you need and nothing more, if you don't need to, just like you would use a standard dictionary.

If you operate a Juniper router from time to time, or even on a daily basis, this book should be always on your desk, handy to grab, so you can use it whenever you need to answer a configuration or operational question, when you exhausted reading the standard configuration guides and the online help, and just before calling for help from a friend or from Juniper's Technical Assistance Center (JTAC).

About the Author

Henry James (1843-1916) was an iconic figure of nineteenth century literature. Read this for my Senior Seminar class before graduating with my B.A. in English and best book Ive had to read for school!

I just graduated with a B.A. degree in English and this book was on my syllabus for my Senior Seminar class, where our semester theme was novellas (longer than short stories, shorter than novels) I had heard of it, but never read it before. Typically, when a book is placed on a syllabus, it becomes a task to read rather than an enjoyment (just a student thing lol). But, not this one! I didn't want to stop reading it! The class discussions on this book/novella were amazing since the author kept thing ambiguous for a reason. So this would be perfect for a book club. While this book could be considered a novel because it is a little longer than your typical novella, it's still a quick read. And by the end, you'll be wishing it was longer!

I bought it for a college class, it was OK. James' sentence structure is rough to get through. I ended up reading plot summaries online because they were easier to understand. The 3 stars is for the average story.

A great edition for "The Turn of the Screw"

This anthology was put together in a way that gives the reader a great perspective of what motivated James to write a ghost story at the end of the 19th Century. The introduction to the story is comprehensive, the story is annotated well (however several annotations were incorrect), and the articles and theory explanations are well done and add depth to the understanding of James's story. If you are looking for a solid understanding of the time period and the motivation behind the story, this anthology is a great choice.

About halfway into Powers's follow-up to his National Book Award–winning The Echo Maker, a Nobel Prize-winning author, during a panel discussion, talks about how genetic enhancement represents the end of human nature.... A story with no end or impediment is no story at all. This then, is a story with both. Its hero, at least initially, is Russell Stone, a failed author of creative nonfiction turned reluctant writing instructor who cannot help transmitting to his students something of his flagging faith in writing. One of them, a Berber Algerian named Thassadit Amzwar, is so possessed by preternatural happiness that she's nicknamed Miss Generosity by her prematurely jaded classmates and has emerged from the Algerian civil war that claimed the lives of her parents glowing like a blissed out mystic. After Stone learns that Thassadit may possess a rare euphoric trait called hyperthymia, her condition is upgraded from behavioral to genetic, and Powers's novel makes a dramatic shift when Thassadit falls into the hands of Thomas Kurton, the charismatic entrepreneur behind genetics lab Truecyte, whose plan to develop a programmable genome to regulate the brain's set point for well-being may rest in Miss Generosity's perpetually upbeat alleles. While Newsday protested the throng of subjects vying for readers' attention, others praised the complexity of Powers's novel of ideas. Critics also diverged over Powers's characters—"flesh-and-blood" (Denver Post) or "two-dimensional" (Los Angeles Times)—and his unnamed, postmodern narrator, who periodically interrupts the story to question readers' beliefs about the characters and plot. A somewhat difficult but provocative read.

Complicated but engaging story of a young woman with the "happiness gene." Some of the language is stunning and some of it is tedious and over-written. Our book group gave it mixed reviews as some could not finish it because it was unapproachable. But there was lively discussion about several topics from gene manipulation to psychology to the give and take of relationships.

Interesting but unsatisfying fiction

What's great about "Generosity": Memorable characters and a fascinating premise. What's not great: The inevitable depressing trajectory of the plot and the author's irritating attempts to break the fourth wall.

You know from the beginning that this is going to be one of those literary novels whose theme is "anything good in the world inevitably gets ruined." I've read that book too many times already. And the author evidently thinks he's doing something really cool and clever by commenting on his writing process within the book. News flash: It's been done before, and better--Pirandello's "Six Characters In Search of An Author" is almost a hundred years old. In my opinion, unless an author has something really unusual to offer by intruding into the story, s/he should stay out of the way and let the story do the talking. I think the story would have been strong enough on its own (if still kind of a downer) without the authorial self-insertion, but if Powers didn't have that much confidence in it, maybe he should have written another book.

Still, it's a well-written book and one I'm still thinking about, albeit with a high degree of irritation. What is happiness, anyway? For me, it's reading a story where the author stays offstage!

Generosity: An Enhancement
Many fans, myself included, appreciate Richard Powers as a humanist who can artfully bridge his understanding of sciences into his fiction, as he did in Gold Bug Variations and Galatea 2.2: A Novel, for example. In his new novel, Generosity: An Enhancement, Powers explores issues entangled in genetic engineering, questions about what it means to be human and to be happy.

The principal characters are a young Algerian woman who appears happiness gifted, Thassadit Amzwar (Thassa), and her writing teacher at a fictional Chicago college ("Mesquakie"), Russell Stone. Based on just a few exposures to Thassa in his writing class Russell begins to worry that she is too happy, which he somehow perceives to put her at risk. He involves a college counselor, Candace Weld, who after a brief informal meeting assigns a diagnostic name to Thassa's condition, "hyperthymia." The plot proceeds along two main lines from there, as television personalities and bio-engineering entrepreneurs fasten on to Thassa to serve their own ends and as a romance between Russell and Candace inches along.

Powers brings in a fair amount of what psychologists, neuroscientists, and geneticists have to say these days about the causal correlates and manifestations of happiness. His chief vehicle is his fictional genomics entrepreneur, Thomas Kurton, who takes on Thassa as an object of study and potential profit. Kurton believes there are happiness genes and he advocates market access to them for parents who want to bestow such blessings upon their children.

Powers is more satirically critical of contemporary culture in Generosity than in his earlier works. In addition to over-reaching bio-engineers, he particularly targets mass communications: cell phones, blogs, streaming "news," "time shifting," "user generated" content, social networking sites, television news, science celebrity shows, the Oprah show, and more.

One other significant thing is going on in Generosity: Powers writes about writing. Interlocutions from an author character are staggered throughout. We are frequently reminded that it is just a story, that the author hasn't figured out yet what will happen, and that he cares about his characters. Remember too that Russell teaches (the course is "creative non-fiction"), so the class scenes and his assigned text ("Make Your Writing Come Alive") offer opportunities for further commentary on the enterprise of writing. One wonders whether this aspect reflects Powers' own doubts and concerns about the story he is constructing.

Powers has been criticized in the past for failing to fully animate his characters. Here Thassa might appear to rescue him from that charge. But it is never credibly demonstrated for us why people are so convinced of her elevated and persistent happiness almost immediately upon meeting her. For the most part we are simply told that they are. When Russell and Candace quickly become concerned about her they have insufficient evidence either that she has some sort of unique endowment or that she is exposed because of it. Consequently they become rather too frantic about Thassa's fate very early on when nothing was yet out of hand.

Russell himself is not the sort of dynamic protagonist that might ease the author's task. At one juncture we are told that, "He's forgotten exactly what subassembly of the collective human project he is responsible for, or when exactly it might be due," a characterization that seems applicable more or less throughout. Candace is the responsible adult, a consummate professional in her counseling work and a dutiful single mother. Powers writes that together Russell and Candace "... stand there awkwardly, two more victims of natural selection, caught between negativity bias and the eternal belief that the future will be slightly better than the present." As you might surmise, this hardly makes for a sizzling romantic relationship.

Most of the other characters basically represent stereotypes, particularly Kurton and Thassa's classmates. The most fully-realized may be Tonia Schiff, a television science journalist -- we learn enough about her upbringing and the changes she's gone through that she seems authentic, even if we may not like her. Russell's brother Robert makes only a few appearances, but delivers the funniest passages in the book.

Typically it is the fundamentals that carry good fiction, the plot and characters. With Powers it is more the intellectual superstructure. If you have read him before and enjoyed it you will likely find Generosity satisfying as well. If you are looking for some breakthrough in his writing you may be disappointed. If you are new to him, this book will show you how he works.

About the Author
Alphonse Louis Constant, better know by his pen name Eliphas Levi, was a master of the traditional Rosicrucian interpretation of the Kabbalah. He was born in France in 1810, and through the offices of the parish priest, was educated for the church at SaintSulpice. He was later expelled from seminary for teaching doctrines contrary to those of the Roman Catholic Church. In 1824 Levi began studying the occult sciences, and wrote about magic and the Kabbalah for the next three decades. His other books include "Transcendental Magic", "Mysteries of the Qabalah", and "The Book of Splendours".

the Bane of Scholars is the Occultist's Reward!

Eliphas Levi's "History of Magic" is probably the most singularly beautiful, profoundly romantic and Personal rendering of the history of Magic ever penned. It is as much a sourcebook for the Symbolist/Decadent fin-de-siecle generation as is Baudelaire's Flowers of Evil & Paris Spleen, and ironically, Levi collaborated with Baudelaire on the work entitled:"Les Mysteres Galants".(webb. Occult Underground,266) It is essential to grasp when involved in such a historical treatise as this, that in Occultism, as in religious thought: EXPERIENCE TAKES PRECEDENCE OVER DOCTRINE. If one is seeking verifiable facts given in chronological order that is simple to digest and retain, look elsewhere. For Levi is speaking of history in relation to his own private researches, to which he had dedicated his life since entering the priesthood in the Roman Catholic Church at the age of twelve. His is also a history of magic with literary antecedents; to the likes of Aurthur Rimbaud for instance, this work of Levi/Constant's was a veritable bible, whose symbolism permeates works such as "A Season In Hell" to a deliriant degree. There is perhaps not one writer or Artist regardless of medium between the years 1860-1930 who was not at least familiar with Levi/Constant; this fact extends from his own friends, such as Balzac, de Nerval, Victor Hugo, Dumas- to Breton, Crowley, Bataille, Meyrink, Henry Miller and innumerable others! The names cover from Western to Eastern Europe, as well as North America; and it is Levi who established what we define, in its cultural sense, as "Occultism" today. It is also largely because of his pioneering Occult works that the "19th century Occult Revival" merged with the Arts of the day, giving birth to the idea of "Art as Religion, & the Artist as Priest/magician". It was in the Occult that the Artist(spelled for the 1st time with a capital)found a definition of his own position, and most granted the highest respect and admiration to the Rabelaisian personage of Alphonse Louis Constant, which is Levi's real name. Aleister Crowley's lifework was centered around Eliphas's dream of a reconciliation between the arts of science & religion, for which he laboured and set down all that was required in his Occult as well as religious and revolutionary tomes, comprising together at least 20 works. The essential question in Levi's History Of Magic is NOT the accuracy of his scholarly objectivity, but his system's origins, structure, goals, and the benefits it bestows and light shined upon the Occultist's understanding of Magic in relation to the history of magic; that Levi's historical system differs from other interpretations is due to the fact that he was not so much interested in the historical facts as much as how the history and the knowledge it produced could benefit the modern-day Occultist operating in the world today. In this respect the text is given over to interpretation of all variety of magical personages, events, accomplishments, inventions, and works. Also essential to know is that it is thanks to the genius of the Philosopher/mathmetician Hoene Wronski and his CaBalistic insights that Levi gleaned much in his Philosophical approach. One may benefit also by disregarding any facts pseudo-scholar Waite provides on Constant's background as he had at the time of writing his prefaces' not one single work in regards to the life of Levi; his critical insights however are as valid as any, and for all his seeming hostility he in reality is truly, next to Crowley, perhaps Levi's biggest fan! waite is also to be commended for providing the bibliographical sources for those seeking "established facts"( which merely means some few people agree upon what they themselves only know from yet another source of questionable reliability) It is quite evident from a philosophical standpoint that the Occultist's rewards reaped from their experience outweighs in practical value what is the scholar's bane regardless of any amount of scholarly exactitude. In this sense, as much as in the exquisitely-toned bardic prose of Levi, he has created a historical work that will outlast innumerable others, standing as it does on the merits of great literature as well as being universally regarded as a pioneering classic of Occultism.

An excellent exposition of the existence of Magick!

This is the single greatest book on the history of the Spiritual Art and Science of Magick. My only two complaints about the book are that it's written in a rather biased view, from a purely Christian perspective (not that any other religion's perspective would be any better!) and the translator/editor, Arthur Edward Waite, once again sees fit to make some useless and innacurate remarks here and there. But still read his footnotes! He makes some legitimate points in this book!

The Only Occultism You Need

I have read everything in the history of occultism, from the The Book of Splendors to the Picatrix, from Hermes Trimegustus to Madam Blavatsky, Agrippa to Albert Pike. This is the only book on occultism you will ever need. Levi knows more about the history of the magi than any writer anywhere. Those who believe he is inaccurate have only an outer knowledge of the inner tradition. If you have gotten to the point where you know of this book, buy it.

Great book to focus your attention on designing for a purpose

While this book series might suggest that this is the most basic of how to write HTML pages, it is much, much more than that. Instead, its an excellent 231pg book and how to design a GREAT website, with details about many essential aspects and brief summaries of how to do other, more advanced or exceptional aspects (e.g. how to ad a survey to your site).

The book doesn't start with how to write HTML code. It starts with how to think about and to DESIGN a web site. To think about a web site as a tool, and thus what goal is to be address thru the use of that tool. As such it emphasizes planning user interaction & navigation, as well as what makes for good writing for the web.

Its not a long nor an exhaustive book, and not a reference for coding. But it does one thing very well in my judgment. That is to guide its readers toward a well conceived, coherent understanding of their own purposes in having a web site, and to guide them in employing the tools of the web to effect those purposes.
