I loved these books!

I loved these books! JS Cooper never fails to deliver!
The Private Club part 1: What has Meg gotten herself into? What exactly is the Private Club and how involved is Brandon with Greyson? The chemistry between Meg and Greyson is unbelievable. I'm going to go crazy until part 2 comes out!

The Private Club part 2: The plot continues to thicken! Maybe, just maybe Greyson isn't as bad as we think. Or is he worse? More questions to be answered. Just what is Nancy up to and where'd she go? Will Brandon be able to answer Megs questions? I can't wait for the conclusion!

The Private Club part 3: Things aren't always as they seem. This final book in the Private Club answered lots of questions. The chemistry between Meg and Greyson is off the chart! I can't wait to read The Love Trials to find out all the secrets of the Private Club and what happened to Nancy.

Worth Reading!!!

The Private Club Boxed Set is a great read. Meg believes she has an interview at a private club for a bartending position. Greyson is one of the sexy owners of the club and the chemistry between the two is hot, making this book one steamy read. Even though we have yet to figure out what the position is, there are secrets within the club that makes you want to know exactly what is going on and for Meg having a little fun with the sexy owner isn’t a bad or is it? Greyson warns Meg that she should run as far away from him as fast as possible but his warnings go unheard as lust has taken over. Things are definitely not what they seem and you will realize after reading this series that what you thought was very, very, wrong. The twist within this series is will blindside you at every turn in a great way. I love that this series gives us the story of how The Private Club was formed between friends and how Greyson’s past had a part to do with the man he is. This series was an excellent, steamy read full of suspense and surprises and I look forward to reading future books from author J.S. Cooper.

If you read Ex Games, you'll be familiar with characters in this series. If not, the series can be read separate and wet your appetite to read Ex Games. This is the story of Meg and Greyson (I so love this character). Meg applies for a job at The Private Club, thinking to be a bartender and meets Greyson, one of the owners. Yet, the Private Club is more than it seems. Greyson is more than he seems too. This is a great way to purchase this series, so you don't have to wait between books. JS Cooper has the most amazing ideas for her books and just when you think you know where it is going, she totally surprises you.

Powerful Writer of his Time!

Growing up while reading all of these in the original German and in the fine English translations. Every story impacts and remains in one's memory bank.

Each story is a masterpiece

Thomas Mann won the Nobel Prize for "Buddenbrooks" and "The Magic Mountain"--both toweringly long novels of great complexity. These short stories, however, are as sharp and quick as a paring knife. Some of the stories are sketches for the monumental novels to come, such as "Tristan"--a satirical look at inmates in a sanatorium. Others are sweetly sick, for example "Blood of the Walsungs", which has something of the style of "Death in Venice." Some say the children in "Walsungs" are modeled after Mann's own. I don't know if this is true, but it's a shocking idea.

The stories vary from whimsical to fantastic, to tragic or even tragi-comedy. They are some of Mann's best work outside his novels, and though some are early works, they are interesting in showing the seeds of theme and promise in Mann's later great works. I consider this a "must-read" for anyone tackling Mann's bigger works.

Intriguing and Exciting - Read it!

"Stories of Three Decades" is an excellent compilation of Mann's stories for novice and connoisseur alike. It contains the expected and well-known short stories such as Death in Venice and Little Herr Freidemann, but also more obscure but equally intriguing and accessible works such as his complete play "Fiorenza." The inclusion of this play exemplifies the thoroughness of the compilation, since this is the only book in which I've been able to find the play translated into English.
I found the translation was a bit more literal than in other translations, but this doesn't take away from the artistry. If anything, it more accurately depicts the cadences of Mann's original German so that we can more accurately understand his tone, if not necessarily the beauty and complexity of the descriptive language.
I urge EVERYONE to buy and read this book. The beauty of the short length of some of his stories is just that: they're short! So if you just want a small dose of Mann, you can select a short story, or if you want a large dose, you can select a longer work. Just approach the masterful literature with an open mind ready for a fresh experience, and there's no chance you'll have a Mann overdose!

About the Author
One of India's most cherished figures, Rabindranath Tagore (18611914) was a novelist, shortstory writer, poet, essayist, painter, educationist and thinker, the first nonEuropean to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1913. He modernised Bengali literature, moving it away from its rigid classical form and strict linguistic structure. It shakes you away from your rigid beliefs.

Gora is inteligent, energetic and a strong believer. He believes in believing and acting for those beliefs. He is strong he is aggressive. He thinks that the strong belief can bring in all the good. Strong belief in God, Culture, country, ... will automatically make them self confident and will lead to progress. Which will eliminate the problems for the society. He subscribes to the beliefs, that he thinks are birth right to him. He is strong Hindu, He is strong Indian, Strong __, ... At the end he comes to know that his all the beliefs are baseless. He is devastated! The meaning of his existence was closely bound to his beliefs, but there is nothing to believe. What can he survive on? He gains new insights and so do we.
All the women characters are simply great!! Which is very characteristic of Tagore and Sharad Chandra.

Typical Tagore, untypical for its times

To truly appreciate this book one needs to have some fair idea of the social, religious and political situation of India during the late nineteenth-early twentieth century. This book revolutionised the thinking and beliefs of the then contemporary modern thinkers and intellectuals, laying the foundation of the idea of a secular Indian society. The underlying theme is the essence of being a human, and very few in the history of mankind could find words that brings this out so beautifully (more so in the original Bengali, much of it is lost in the English translation). The reader undergoes the journey of self discovery along with the main protagonist, Gora. The beauty of Tagore's writing is that the unpredicatability and the vulnerability of the characters make them so natural and real, bringing out the inherent self-contradictions of human beings until they discover their true self and then all the cunfusions and the contradictions in one's own faith vanish. One finds one's place in this cosmos, realises the implication of being a human, experiences the beauty of life. And this makes the appeal of the book timeless.

Don't buy this kindle edition. The book is a classic in Indian literature, but this edition has the worst translation. The author has translated bengali into english word to word, with no semblance of grammar, sentence structure or meaning. Better get the penguin paperback edition, and not this mess.

I will read these again. I enjoyed many of the books. And like all anthologies a few left me scratching my head and going Hmmm? Either way it was an enjoyable way to spend a few summer days. I took a star away for editing.

About the Author
H.R. Ekbia is associate professor of information science and cognitive science at Indiana University, where he is also affiliated with the School of Informatics. Initially trained as an engineer, Ekbia switched his focus to study cognitive science in order to pursue a lifelong interest in the workings of the human mind. To get a deeper understanding of the questions that AI research and writing posed but hastily tackled, Ekbia in turn began to focus on the philosophy of science and science studies, through which he discovered novel ways of thinking about science, technology, and the human mind. This broad intellectual background is well reflected in Ekbia's writings, which range over a diverse set of topics on the human mind, machines, and the mediated interactions between the two. Ekbia has taught extensively in the areas of computer science, information science, and cognitive science. He currently teaches human-computer interaction and social informatics at the School of Library and Information Science at Indiana University.

Don't get scared away by the title....what an awesome read!

I must say I was sort of skeptical about how useful this book will be for me. I decided to give it a shot and I was totally blown away. This is a very detailed analysis of hard and painful attempts of good engineers and scientists to understand and implement AI concepts. If you are having this new brilliant idea of an AI system implementation "nobody has thought of yet" - read this book. You will probably find out that someone has already spent a decade working on it. And the best thing about this book is that it is not discouraging as the title may suggest. It is actually quite the opposite - it gives you compilation of all the hard work in the area of AI so you can move forward without getting into traps the ones before you fell into. IMO this book is worth so much more than it costs!

AI is Not What it Seems

Well, at least, that's what Ekbia's position seems to be. He focuses on the fine differences between "true" and "artificial" (if at all) intelligence. This book is not a technical tome and makes for relatively easy reading. However, it would help if the reader was already somewhat familiar with basic AI approaches (in which the book's appendices help). Ekbia discusses computer chess (e.g. Deep Blue), case-based reasoning (e.g. Coach), artificial commonsense (e.g. Cyc), "emotional" robots (e.g. Kismet) and a selection of other examples which provide a good overview of the different perspectives both the public and researchers have about AI accomplishments. Some of Ekbia's arguments are difficult to argue against. For example, it is true that some researchers overstate their case in terms of just how "intelligent" or significant a particular approach is. Computers, after all, work in a mechanical fashion and have no real conception about the things they are working with. In many cases, this is obvious once you look "under the hood"; but in others, it is possibly just a matter of perspective. Take chess, for example. While the brute-force approach seems to work well and is purely mechanical, we cannot overlook the significance of the heuristic evaluation functions which are equally important. These are usually specifically designed by humans. Not to mention that this combination has resulted in programs running on desktop machines that can today outplay even grandmasters. In fairness, Ekbia does not trivialize this type of "success" in AI but suggests, rightfully, that we have perhaps just found a different approach to "thinking" in chess, and chess alone. But this is how it is in AI. The approach used in chess is neither required nor expected (at least these days) to be directly applicable to other areas with equal effectiveness. This, however, does not mean that at least some of the work done in that domain has not been useful in other domains or fields of research.

Most of the book, including some gems in the footnotes at the back, hover around the point that we are somehow missing something in AI that would put us on the "right path", and that we are, at least, approaching this path slowly, perhaps without even realizing it. With a rich and colorful history behind AI, its future is unlikely to suffer from exactly the same mistakes despite the necessary evil or growing temptation faced by researchers to somewhat mislead industry-related benefactors into thinking they are financing something truly significant. I found myself generally sobering up to Ekbia's insights into AI and learning of happenings in the field that I was previously unaware of myself. Many books on AI will likely come off as highly technical and complicated (a lot of math is usually involved) but this one takes a "higher level" or philosophical approach which, I now think, should not be neglected even in undergraduate study of the field. One should, however, be careful not to give undue reverence to the idea of simply "being human" just because of the current shortcomings in AI. I am nevertheless certainly glad I made it a point to read the book while waiting for my viva voce.

Falls short in its criticism

If one referred to program lists or algorithm steps as a "reasoning pattern" and the program itself as a "cognitive structure" the author of this book would be taken aghast, and might take this as another example of what he refers to as the "generalized Eliza effect" throughout the book. The latter refers to a program, called by its creator "Eliza" that was designed to emulate the psychotherapeutic skills of a professional psychologist. Developed in the 1960's by Joseph Weizenbaum and tested on a collection of unsuspecting "patients", it apparently was able to fool some of these into believing its advice was genuine, or expert psychological counseling. The "patients" questions were recast in such a way as to create the illusion that the program had genuine understanding of psychotherapy and could offer them therapeutic assistance. But the Eliza responses were merely canned phrases, as was revealed by the patient "patient" who took the time to question it for several minutes.

The author uses this program as a paradigm for his main case against the reality of machine intelligence, viewing the program as an excellent example of the false imputation of intelligence to a machine. He gives many other examples throughout the book, all of them being quite familiar to those readers who follow the field of artificial intelligence (AI) or who are active participants in research thereof. As a whole the book is interesting, mostly due to the detail that the author brings to the history of AI and the discussions of some of the attempts to bring about machine intelligence.

However the author's case against AI is incredibly weak, being non-constructive in its strategy and actually being one of many critiques of AI that fall victim to what this reviewer has dubbed the "Michie-McCorduck-Boden effect." This effect, kind of an inverse of the Eliza effect, summarizes the peculiarities and crises of confidence that have dogged research in AI since its inception in the early 1950's. The following quotation from the writer Brian R. Gaines encapsulates it beautifully:

"From the earliest days of AI pioneers such as Donald Michie have noted that an intrinsic feature of the field is that problems are posed such that all those involved accept that any solution must involve `artificial intelligence' but, when the solution is developed and the basis for it is clear, the resultant technology is assimilated into standard information processing and no longer regarded as `intelligent' in any deep sense. When the magician shows you how the trick was done the `magic' vanishes. Much of what has been developed through AI research has diffused in this way into routine information technology: the Michie effect."

Other authors, AI historians, and researchers have made similar commentary as to the nature and progress in the field of AI. In particular the AI historian Pamela McCorduck and the cognitive scientist Margaret Boden have discussed this phenomenon at length. It could thus be referred to as the Michie-McCorduck-Boden effect, and it has huge consequences for general acceptance of machine intelligence, especially for specific views of whether or not a machine is exhibiting intelligence.

The Michie-McCorduck-Boden effect can be considered an inverse "Eliza" effect (as the author describes the latter) in that those who fall under its spell are quick to impute non-intelligence to machines as soon as they uncover "the method behind the magic." The author does this several times in this book: in his criticism of connectionism, the Cyc project, and Deep Blue. Once he discovers the processes or algorithms that each of these "programs" uses, he points out their shortcomings in semantics and a notion of "meaning" that he never really explains to the reader. But he still wants to describe human cognition as "intelligent", which he refers to as a "complex, multifaceted, and multilevel phenomenon."

But is human cognition the way he describes it? And once it is "unraveled" as he puts it, will it in turn be delegated to a trivial collection of processes in the same way as chess programs and natural language processors (e.g. Cyc) have been? If historical trends are to be followed with respect to the science of human cognition as they were in research in AI, there is every reason to believe that once the "method behind the magic" of human cognition is discovered it will trivialized in just the way that machine processes are. Will the notion of "intelligence" then fade from scientific discourse, both in machines and humans? Maybe.

The book is thus full of examples of projects that fall short if judged from true intelligence or "meaningful" knowledge as the author discusses it (and he does so with the admission that the dividing line between information and knowledge is too "fuzzy"). But what is so deeply troubling is not the vagueness in which the author addresses these issues, but rather the insistence that the AI projects such as Cyc and case-based reasoning must be complete or all-encompassing before we can regard them as intelligent. If Cyc gets bogged down in a question-answer session for a particular domain it must rejected the author seems to argue. He forgets that even human experts in particular domains, like physics for example, typically make mistakes in their scientific narratives, and we certainly don't want to reject their expertise outright because of a few blunders on their part. A reasonable outlook on the projects discussed in the book would consist of estimating the risk that the user takes on when using machines that deploy Cyc, case-based reasoning, or connectionism. Such machines will not be "fool-proof and incapable of error" and their solutions to problems or answers to questions may seem foolish or incomplete at times. But such is the nature of intelligence, and insisting otherwise puts unreasonable expectations on machines (or humans for that matter).

This reviewer therefore disagrees strongly with the author's conclusions, but does agree that one must emphasize both the practical applications of AI as well as the theories and formal constructions behind these applications. One must also step beyond the media and advertising hype, the overindulgences of Hollywood movies and rapid-fire press releases, and give an honest and objective assessment of the status of AI as it exists at the present time. Therefore "futurism", unjustified optimism, and wishful thinking should be carefully guarded against. On the other hand great care should be taken to distinguish skepticism from cynicism, and there should be no hesitation from expressing emotion when contemplating genuine discoveries in machine intelligence. We must not be guarded in our enthusiasm in this regard.

The field of artificial intelligence is a healthy one, and delivers practical technology, with its influence rapidly increasing in the twenty-first century. For better or worse, and in spite of the tremendous social changes that AI might cause, from a rigorous and careful study of the evidence, we can turn Hollywood on its head and use one of its movie titles with pleasure: we can say with confidence that we are entering a world of the silicon geniuses; a world of the avatars. We are witnessing the rise of the machines.

The Woman Warrior is a pungent, bitter, but beautifully written memoir of growing up Chinese American in Stockton, California. Maxine Hong Kingston (China Men) distills the dire lessons of her mother's mesmerizing "talk-story" tales of a China where girls are worthless, tradition is exalted and only a strong, wily woman can scratch her way upward. The author's America is a landscape of confounding white "ghosts"--the policeman ghost, the social worker ghost--with equally rigid, but very different rules. Like the woman warrior of the title, Kingston carries the crimes against her family carved into her back by her parents in testimony to and defiance of the pain.

Maxine Hong Kingston grew up in two worlds. There was "solid America," the place her parents emigrated to, and the China of her mother's "talk-stories." In talk-stories women were warriors and her mother was still a doctor in China who could cure the sick and scare away ghosts, not a harried and frustrated woman running a stifling laundromat in California. But what is story and what is truth? In China, a ghost is a supernatural being; in America it is anyone who is not Chinese. In addition, underlying even the most exciting talk-stories of Chinese women warriors is the real oppression of Chinese women: "There is a Chinese word for the female 'I' - which is 'slave.' " In an attempt to figure out her world, Maxine Hong Kingston finds herself creating stories of her own, filling in the blanks her mother has not told her because her daughter is, after all, not true Chinese and thus cannot be completely trusted. Can these new stories explain why she had trouble speaking in the American schools? Can they help her understand the aunt who committed adultery and whose existence is denied? The new stories refuse to fall into traditional forms, and the realizations that come from them often bring out a beautiful, passionate anger that practically burns through the pages. Crossing the Line

The Woman Warrior, by Maxine Hong Kingston, captures readers with her own interpretation of what it was like to grow up as a female Chinese American. As a little girl, she came to America with her family. Despite being in a new country, she had to deal with the old traditions from her homeland. Kingston hears different legends which she pieces together to create her woman warrior. It becomes her source of strength in a society that rejected both her sex as well as her race. The book, divided into five interwoven stories, is at times confusing as it jumps around. Nevertheless she does a great job explaining her life while growing up. The first story, called "No Name Woman," tells of her paternal aunt who bears a child out of wedlock and is harried by the villagers and by her family into drowning herself. The family now punishes this taboo-breaker by never speaking about her and by denying her name. However, Kingston breaks the family silence by writing about this rebel whom she calls "my forebear." The next story is called "White Tigers." It is a myth about a heroine named Fa Mu Lan, who fights in place of her father and saves her village. This story became the Disney movie, Mulan. "Sharman" is a story of Kingston's mother. It explores what it was like to study as a woman to become a doctor in China. "At the Western Palace" is about Kingston's aunt who comes to America and discovers that her husband has remarried in America. Finally, the last story, "A Song for a Barbarian Reed Pipe" is about Kingston's own experience in America when she first arrived. She explains what it was like to be a newcomer in a strange culture. Kingston constantly mentions that her friends and she are ghosts because they are American. All of the people who surround her family are ghosts, except for the Chinese people who live on the Gold Mountain, a section of Chinatown in San Francisco. Kingston feels like a ghost herself, " .... We had been born among ghosts, were taught by ghosts, and were ourselves ghost-like. The Americans call us a kind of ghosts" (p.183). The interpretation of what ghosts mean in this book is difficult to figure out. It could show how some people view a person from a different culture with ignorance as if she doesn't exist. Kingston's The Woman Warrior has some similarities with The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. First of all, both stories are written by Chinese American authors about their cultural heritage. Both novels deal with major concerns faced by Chinese American women. Living with their traditional culture in American society, Chinese-American women suffer problems of cultural conflicts. However, there are differences that make each work distinct. The Joy Luck Club is fiction and is not personal. It is also more likely to be read for pleasure. The Woman Warrior portrays a first hand view of the cultural differences between the United States and China. Also, Kingston succeeds in combining her emotions with her experiences. The Woman Warrior is a fascinating book. One of the most amazing aspects of this book is Kingston's ability to show how silence is a form of communication and how it shaped her being. Her mother tells her to be silent, yet she goes against her cultural standards by talking about her aunt. This act of will on Kingston's part offers the readers her ancestry. The expectation of silence can be simplified into a symbol of oppression. As a Korean-American, I felt the emotions and understood how Kingston felt for being a stranger to a new culture. Her internal struggle to fit into two different societies is difficult. I personally recommend this book to anyone interested in reading about the experience of one Chinese-American woman. It is not the definitive story of Chinese-American women's experience, but it is a very vivid and well-written account of one woman's life. Pg. 209. Challenging, rewarding read

This is a remarkably intelligent, personal account of success, failure, frustration, and identity. No, the writing and structure are not straightforward, and yes, some of the plotline may be disturbing. But this is ultimately an intellectually rewarding read, and a personally emotionally moving experience.
The anti-feminist backlash this novel seems to elicit (e.g., on this review page) should be testimony to how provocative it is, and how many assumptions it can challenge.
As for it being a misrepresentation of Chinese culture, well, it's a subjective account. It's the culture through Maxine's eyes (and her family's eyes); it is not meant to be an objective anthropological study. And I did not find it at all exoticizing. In fact, it's a shame that MHK often gets mentioned in the same sentence as Amy Tan -- beyond the superficial similarity of both being Asian-American women, they have little in common. MHK does none of the silly exoticization that AT does, and at least to me, does not engage in the "Asians must be rescued by Western culture" ideology of AT. This is ultimately a personal, autobiographical account, that is neither judgmental nor self-pitying.

Ramblings of stories of family relationships and cultural tales lacking organization. The book needs editing. Read a classic. There are reasons classic books and authors are given such a classification.
