In this crafty story of a cross-country race called "The Great Divide," numerical division accounts for the narrowing of the field. Eighty costumed competitors (in 10 groups of eight) begin the event on bicycles, but only half of them ford a rocky red canyon to continue: "On with the race./ Head for a boat!/ Forty racers now have to float!" These 40 (now 10 groups of four) climb aboard two big rowboats, and a whirlpool diminishes their number by half again. Dodds (Sing, Sophie!) continues reducing the group to 10 and to five, at which point "one runner stops with a rock in her shoe," enabling the final four to grab tandem bikes. The author demonstrates rather than describes the math, and her terse rhymes reinforce the racers' sense of urgency. Meanwhile Mitchell's individualized portraits of the athletes raise the book's quotient of pleasure. The illustrator, making a notable picture-book debut, carefully includes the dwindling number of eight clowns, eight cowhands, eight flappers, eight pirates and so on in her well-organized acrylic paintings; aspiring number crunchers can count the participants with ease. Among the top contenders, likable characters emerge: a jailbird wears a determined grin, a grandmotherly lady rides a galloping horse and a firefighter sticks out her tongue in exhaustion. Grade 1-4-This rhyming tale of a great race demonstrates the basic principle of division. Eighty contestants start out on bikes; they come to a fork in the path and half blunder left, where their tires pop. The other 40 keep going by boat, until they reach a whirlpool where half of them are again knocked out of the race. This continues until only five contestants are left, and Dodds sneaks past this tricky problem by having one contestant stop with a rock in her shoe while the other four move on, only to be thwarted. In a surprise ending, the fifth contestant sneaks back in to win the race. Though the plot is minimal, the story does an effective job of getting the concept across in a fun way. The illustrations, done in acrylics over modeling paste, are bold enough to keep pace with the action. A variety of faces and costumes appear among the contestants, from old ladies to clowns to cowboys and sailors. Elinor Pinczes's One Hundred Hungry Ants (Houghton, 1993) offers a similar concept in a more engaging story, but the pictures here are certainly appealing. With the current demand for math-related picture books, this is a natural addition for libraries.

As she does in THE GREAT DIVIDE, Dayle Ann Dodds often writes in rhyme because "it is so natural to kids' ears. Rhyme, rhythm, and pattern help kids remember small revelations in entertaining stories," she says. Dayle Ann Dodds lives in Palo Alto, California.

Tracy Mitchell was born in Boston but grew up in New Orleans, a city whose influence is evident in her art style. THE GREAT DIVIDE is Tracy Mitchell's first picture book, and she says that working with such a large number of characters was just one of the many challenges she faced in creating her paintings for the book. "Dividing the racers into crazy groups, like clowns, pirates, and dancers, definitely helped," she says. Tracy Mitchell lives in Somerville, Massachusetts.

A couple of dozen new figures have been added, mostly in the early part of the book. More specifically, the major changes in this new edition are the following. The electronic structure of atoms supplies the guide� lines for the whole account of mineral-chemistry; additional items concern the electrochemical series, of interest in the occurrence and metallurgical treatment of ores, and chemical analysis. On the physical side, the dependence of physical properties of minerals on their atomic structure is emphasized and, in addition, a brief account of radioactivity and isotopic age-determination is given.

Thomas Heimburg received his Ph.D. in physics and his habilitation in biophysics both from the Physics Department of the University of G?ttingen, Germany. He was a Heisenberg Fellow of the German Research Council (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in G?ttingen and head of the independent research group "Membrane Biophysics & Thermodynamics". He was appointed associate professor in the Physics Department of the University of G?ttingen. Now he is associate professor for biophysics at the Niels Bohr Institute of the University of Copenhagen and head of the Membrane Biophysics Group.
His primary research interests are experimental and theoretical thermodynamics and spectroscopy of artificial and biological membranes with a special focus on cooperative phenomena in biomembranes.

The story grabbed me from the beginning because things were happening right away, there was action and there was dialogue, and there wasn't too much time spent filling me in on background before it was necessary. I loved the early phrase, "it would be like the bird house in a zoo." I could imagine exactly how all the twittering young ladies would sound. Some of the other phrases, like "a permanent look of boredom - the default face of teenage girls" are unique and wonderfully descriptive.�I like that Mr. Wild comes across as somewhat a hardass in the beginning. I'm pretty sure I'm going to like this guy.�
The meeting of faculty and their introductions is a clever and very good way to let me know about some of the key players without boring me. Their ways of introducing themselves told me all I initially need to know about them in just a few sentences. It also seems that Lisa is going to be the proverbial fly on the wall, and I expect great insights from someone in a position to be easily overlooked.�
�The writing is strong and clear, and it's obvious that time has been spent in cleaning up any initial mistakes or editing errors, always much appreciated.
It moved at a fast pace, it gave just the amount of background I need to buy into the story, the characters are interesting, and it promises good things to come.

I think it's a very interesting concept. I also think that there are lot of very diverse background characters which will make the story even more fun to read. I like that it's non traditional and that Adam is coming across a likable even though he is strict. I would definitely want to read more.

The idea for WITH THE HEADMASTER'S APPROVAL came about when I noticed how women's behaviour often becomes more guarded when a man joins the group - they are less likely to complain about their husbands, discussions on gynecological problems are off-limit, and there is less raucous laughter, to mention a few. Different emotions also come into play, with the possibility of flirting, and the potential for jealousy. So I wondered how the introduction of a male head teacher would affect the group dynamics of the all-female staff in a girls' school.

The main storyline follows the relationships the new headmaster has with the female teachers, and how those relationships eventually change each of their lives. His presence in the staffroom, sometimes inadvertently overlooked by the staff, teaches him a thing or two about how women behave when men are not around and there are some amusing interactions. The story also follows the bond he has with his late wife's young sister, a relationship that he's always considered that of older brother and kid sister.

I also wanted to explore the emotions of teenage girls and how they would react to a male head teacher who is a strong disciplinarian and introduces some unwelcome changes. Teenage girls can be very manipulative, especially around men, and I set up several subplots for the headmaster to solve. (A beta reader who is also a teacher said she was anxious to see how he was going �to manage the problem girls, quite forgetting that as the author it was me who would be solving the problems!)

The novel is set in the north of England where I grew up, and therefore uses British English spelling, but the main character, Adam Wild, is from the US.� Some scenes are set in South Africa, where I now live. (I happened to be watching re-runs of the original Hawaii 5-O series while I was writing the book and I imagined Jack Lord playing the part of Adam Wild.)

The story took me about eight months to write, it was great fun, and I found myself falling in love with Adam Wild. There are many elements to the story, several of which gave me pause for thought, and I believe you will recognise many of the issues that I have brought to life.
As for Adam, a girl can but dream - and I hope you find the same affection for him as I have. Let's share the dream.

(The book does not slot easily into one particular genre, but I would categorise it is as 'general fiction with a romance element', or perhaps 'women's fiction'. There are some sex scenes, but a 75 year- old reader agreed they are tastefully written, and an 83 year- old was not shocked� - only that I had written them!)

A most enjoyable, skilfully written story with thoroughly likeable characters about whom I cared.

There are many interwoven story lines that complement each other well. When it was suggested to me that this book is perhaps a romance, I was surprised. It has a romantic element yes, but there are so many themes, I'd find it hard to categorise.

As a child I was addicted to Enid Blyton's tales of girls' schools, Malory Towers and St. Clares. Part of the charm of this story for me was nostalgia mixed with a feeling that I was now reading a GROWN-UP version of my beloved old books.

THE AUTHOR HAS AN EXCELLENT VOICE:

WITH THE HEADMASTER’S APPROVAL is a story about a widowed former US Naval Officer selected as the new headmaster of a private British school for girls. It is told through the voices of women who have their own agendas affecting their viewpoint of this man. The novel is an easy read, has an interesting plot and… even for this senior citizen male reader… was an enjoyable read for what I would classify as British Chic Lit. This is an excellent work that was a quarterfinalist in an Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards and was the winner of the best Chick Lit/Women’s Lit category in the 2015 eFestival of Words.

Disclaimer: As an author I have communicated with the author, Jan Hurst-Nicholson, through writer threads and email, and upon completion of reading her work, I provided her a detailed critique. I indicated her voice as an author is very good, but at a few locations in the novel it was lost with too much description of the setting as the story line was suspended for a few pages. To my surprise the author immediately rewrote these parts of the book and sent them to me. The few misgivings I had with her work were immediately eliminated. She also has updated the book on Kindle to reflect these changes. Upon reading other reader reviews on Amazon for this work, I believe the few who posted negative reviews for this work probably would not have done so had they read the book with the changes that are now incorporated.

Good story

It was a toss up between a 3 or 4 star. It's a good story, but a bit confusing! It was kind of like reading the ending of a book first and then reading from the beginning. Some of the chapters started with the conclusion than told the story of how they got there. I didn't like that format, but the characters and their interactions are a great read! So just be forewarned if you're like me and don't like knowing the ending before the story!

A Cracklin' Good Read!

I quite enjoyed Townsend’s first book, Queen City Gothic, delving into Cincinnati’s most infamous unsolved cases. I think I like Notorious even better than Gothic, just for the closure. Here, Townsend peels back the mysteries and exposes these fascinating murder cases to light.

Queen City Notorious is the perfect mix of crimes and time periods throughout the 20th Century. For each case, Townsend describes what happened and puts the case in historical context with other major events occurring around the world. He then describes the players in each drama, what happened and why. For some crimes in the book, though ostensibly solved, there are still major facts or actions that are unknown. Townsend expertly speculates what may have happened and who probably was—and wasn’t—involved.

The first case is one of the most horrific—in 1910, Alice Van Zandt is roasted to death over a gas oven by her husband, left to die while their small child tottled around in the next room. The most outright shocking case was failed businessman Vinton Perin shooting his wealthy mother-in-law Frances Rawson in her Clifton mansion in 1924. Today that case would cause a national sensation and rock every tabloid on the market. It’s almost funny how local papers didn’t know how to report the case of Betty Butler, a black lesbian, drowning her love rival Evelyn Clark. One of the outright strangest stories is when all-American college athlete Jack Rauss slew Goldie Cunningham and her disabled husband James in 1961. It seems he went to visit them and Goldie said something bad about his mother, her close friend, which Jack couldn’t abide. There’s even a bad-boy/girlfriend love triangle murder. Bobby Abbot was going with Alice Ewing in 1964, but he tricked nursing student Wanda Cook into coming to his room at the old Sheraton Gibson Hotel. When she wouldn’t succumb to his desires, he killed her. Alice helped him put the body in a trunk and ship it cross-country. When they were arrested, they couldn’t blame each other fast enough.

Townsend ends the book with another odd passion crime: the murder of Dr. Jane Shutt by her adopted daughter Barbara. When Barbara learned her adopted parents were separating and she would have to move out and make her own way, she lost her mind and murdered her mother most viciously. There are many other gruesome and unusual cases in the book.

You don’t have to be from Cincinnati to marvel at these crimes of passion and gain—you can enjoy the sharp police work and seeing the bad guys get what’s coming regardless of where these crimes happened. Townsend unfolds these stories layer by layer, unraveling the mystery into a just, if not always satisfying, conclusion. Once you get your teeth into one of these stories you won’t be able to stop reading them all. A must-read for true crime buffs and ID Investigation addicts.

Enthralling!

As a follow-up to Queen City Gothic, Queen City Notorious satisfies equally well, in fact, better––since this time the murderers (if still alive when their crimes are uncovered) are identified, caught and brought to justice. J.T. Townsend’s meticulous research and painstaking detail give us front-row seats to crime scenes, perpetrators’ backgrounds, relentless police work in unraveling cases, and eventual punishments.

Vintage photos provide terrific take-you-there perspectives. In some cases, victims feel almost like family members; we come to know them that well. Seventeen-year-old college freshman Susan Aue, for example, shot while still half-asleep in her bed during Christmas break by ex-boyfriend Gordon Pape, is particularly tragic; she possessed the quadruple “threat” of brains, beauty, charm and a loving, privileged family. Such a sad loss of so much potential––and the sadder awareness that if her stalker had behaved so irrationally not in 1956, but 50 years later in 2006, cops would surely have been notified early on to monitor his comings and goings.

This book is a riveting read, chock full of behind-the-scenes trivia and police-blotter specifics. We can’t help being impressed by detectives who began with just a dead body and somehow constructed motive, deed and case worthy of trial. Author Townsend creates a linear path that not only in hindsight makes easy, logical sense––but also enthralls true-crime fans who relish and ride along with so many initial twists and turns.

I AM ADDICTED TO TOWNSEND

Having read QUEEN CITY GOTHIC, I had to read this second book of Townsend's. How could I live my entire life in a city so full of horrible awesomeness and not even realize it?! I had no clue what my own city had to offer and that is sad for me. But these books--I don't know how to put this, but I have trouble putting them down. I go by many of the murder/crime scenes every day!! Lots of great photos, well-written and has done a ton of research on the cases he puts into his books. I am hoping to get to go to one of his lectures sometime and that he has another book coming out soon!
