Exodus has risen!

Exodus Rising was everything that I hoped it would be. I fell in love with the characters in this story. Adrian and Marcelle have grown so much since the beginning, in terms of their faith and character. Exodus Rising completes the Tales of Starlight series as well as the Dragons of starlight series. Every question is answered. This story was stirring, exciting, romantic, and powerful. I related to Adrian and Marcelle so well, because I am the same age as they are. Mr. Davis' jump from young adult fiction to Adult fiction was no jump at all. I look forward to more. A must read beautiful and compelling series.

Exodus Rising

Exodus Rising by Mr. Bryan Davis was amazing. It had me turning the pages late into the night. The characters were well developed and likable which is always very important. The story line was complex, but explained well. Action packed and exciting, I recommend this book to anyone who wants to go on a fantastic adventure and step into perils of danger. I learned a lot from Marcelle and her struggles, I enjoyed watching her learn and become comfortable and more secure in who she is.

This ending to a fantastic trilogy was great, everything tied together nicely in the end. Readers will be pleased.

Excellent Conclusion!

This third book in the Tales of Starlight is a fulfilling conclusion to the journeys of Adrian and Marcelle. Incidentally, Bryan Davis did a masterful job in weaving this series with its companion, Dragons of Starlight. However, it is a refreshing change to be able to read an engaging series for adults which captures both the imagination of fantasy and simplicity of everyday life, yet remains clean.

Total populations may have reached 5 billion birds and comprised up to 40% of the total number of birds in North America. This may be the only species for which the exact time of extinction is known. No appreciable decline in the numbers was noted until the late 1870s but, thereafter, their destruction took only twenty-five years. The immense roosting and nesting colonies invited over-hunting. Tens of thousands of individuals were harvested daily from nesting colonies, and shipped to markets in the east. Modern technology hastened the demise of the passenger pigeon. With the coming of the telegraph, the locations of flocks could be ascertained, and the birds relentlessly pursued. The last bird died in 1914 at the Cincinnati Zoological Garden before any competent ornithologists could write an account of the species. A. W. Schorger reconstructed the life history of the passenger pigeon. Through painstaking research, he examined every aspect of the species -- behavioral characteristics, feeding methods, traveling and roosting habits, nesting - and the various stages of the species encounter with man, from utilization by the Native American to extinction at the hands of white settlers. Schorger's book is the definitive study of the wild pigeon of North America; it covers all matters concerning the birds' natural history and extinction. People with an interest in North American history, ornithology, conservation and the preservation of natural resources will greatly broaden their background and understanding through this detailed and anecdotal study. It contains 424 pages revealing a powerful aspect of North America's history unknown to current generations: skies filled with inconceivable numbers of birds,-as many as two billion in a single migration. Schorger paints a vivid and poignant picture of a world we have lost, tragically, through our own greed and ignorance. Ancient Warfare edited by John Carman and Anthony Harding explores not only warfare in prehistoric cultures by why it is important that we study it and how we study it. The fifteen chapters dive into the question about the very nature of war. Can people armed with stone weapons and defending their towns with dirt walls carry out what we would call war? When a ditch can be used to keep out invaders and keep in cattle, is it a sign of warfare? When a tool can be used as a weapon and a weapon can be used as a tool how can researchers prove if fighting existed in a society thousands of years ago? When is an arrow head just a piece of trash and when it is sign of a warrior culture? How important was trade to fighting or did fighting fuel trade?
The book takes a close look at the material evidence, the bones, the ruins, from the stone age, up to the bronze age and into the iron age. Most of the chapters deal with Europe, but one chapter does focus on North America. The origins of violence is examined and so is warfare as a larger part of human civilization. It asks us the hard questions: Do our modern views twist what we see in the past? Do our ideas of gender, our need for a peaceful or warlike past depending on our modern theories of human evolution, our seeing the sword as a warrior's weapon and ONLY a warrior's weapon make us blind to some of the clues needed to make a complete picture? Do we put too much weight on human aggression or is military conflict just a minor piece in the story of our ancient world?

About the Author
Gretta Curran Browne was born in Dublin city where she spent some of her childhood years in the notorious Goldenbridge orphanage. Later she was transferred to a second orphanage in Preston in England, which was less harsh, and where, due to one special nun, she became acquainted with the magic of storytelling. In her teenage years she moved to London to study Drama, working as a telephonist at night to pay her rent and attending Drama school in the day: after which she spent some years working full time in theatre and occasionally in television. Her first attempts at professional writing began after her two children were born, and she became a full-time mother, writing at night when the world and her children were asleep. She began with two short stories, both of which won prizes. She then began her first novel, `Tread Softly On My Dream’s, based on the true story of the young Irish hero, Robert Emmet. Published by Headline and critically acclaimed by the Press, Tread Softly On My Dreams was acquired by the University of Notre Dame in the US, and The Princess Grace Irish Library in the palace of Monaco. This was followed by her second Irish novel, Fire On The Hill and later followed by her first contemporary novel, Ghosts In Sunlight. Gretta’s writing career was interrupted in full flow when her son broke his back in an accident and needed her care for some years. Now fully recovered, her son is a successful young actor and Gretta has returned to her passion for writing. She has just completed her new Historical novel, By Eastern Windows, based again on a true story, set primarily in Scotland and India, and has already started work on the sequel The Far Horizon, set primarily in early Australia. Gretta is married to a lawyer and lives in London.

Why so few reviews?

I honestly don't understand why this book doesn't have a thousand positive reviews. I love historical fiction. However I realize it's not a popular genre, so I assume that explains the lack of reviews. There are a lot of characters to keep up with. It's not a fluff read, but certainly not a difficult read. I absolutely loved it. If you are at all interested in the history if Ireland I strongly recommend this book. There is a lot of information about the political & judicial system of the time, but it is not a dry book. You will also find a love story & fully developed characters that will make you not want to put the book down. I wish it had ended differently, but since the book is based on fact sadly that couldn't be....sigh

Erin go bragh, Ireland forever! That's one of the overwhelming feelings I have experienced as I read and reread this Gretta Curran Browne novel. I also feel that I'm tapping into actual history. As this is written as a fiction, it is actually based on real characters and real events. This is what I like to call "creative nonfiction" and it is enjoyable to read Browne's interpretation and her imaginatively insightful development of characters.

I was first intrigued by the title, and then the words from which it originated, a Yeats quote, ""I have spread my dreams under your feet. Tread softly..."
The title and the quote are haunting as they pierce the soul.

When I began reading this novel, a family and a group of identifiable people emerged as if they were real, quite methodically developed, and I began to care for them and their relationships. That feeling continued throughout this well crafted novel. Highly recommended.
