The book arrived today and I am amazed by the stunning aerial photographs in this book

Several months ago the Washington Post published a picture section with some of the pictures in Air by Vincent Laforet. After seeing them , I immediately had to find this book and purchase it. It had not yet been published but the publisher was taking orders. The book arrived today and I am amazed by the stunning aerial photographs in this book. The bulk of the photographs were taken at night, with a few taken at dusk, dawn, or during the day. Laforet captures all the color, detail and patterns of major cities throughout the world. They really convey the enormity of these large cities and present both macroscopic view and more microscopic views of the cities from the air. Some show the patterns, or lack of patterns, of the roadways and layout of the cities. Others show the skyscrapers taken from afar while others provide a closer view. The colors come from the myriad of lighting sources to produce a wide palette of vivid nighttime colors. I have always loved the old black & white photographs taken of New York City, but now seeing the city and its skyscrapers at night is even more thrilling.

The book itself is a coffee table book, measuring about 11" x15" and is quite hefty. It is printed on high quality paper. I mention this because Amazon incorrectly lists the size as being 5.9 x 0.9 x 8.3 inches. My only complaint about the book is that the pages do not lie flat. Many, if not most, pictures span two opposing pages and the curvature of the crease detracts from the visual impact of the photographs. The photographs were clearly taken with a very high resolution camera, which adds to the visual impact of the photographs. I showed the book to my wife and she, being very budget conscious, asked how much it cost. When I told her that it cost $59, she breathed a sigh of relief telling me that she though it cost over $100. Considering the quality of the photographs, this book is a real bargain. This book will likely appeal to photography aficionados and world travelers.

Photos were great; font not so much.

I too just received my copy of the book which I had preordered before publication. I'm a retired printer so naturally I checked out the quality of the printing and binding first and found both to be absolutely first class. No problem there. The paper stock used is appropriately heavy and opaque given that the photos were flooded with ink. Again, no problem.

The photos themselves were awesome! Reaction to art is highly personal so I won't comment too much on the photos except to say that the shots with shallow depth of field didn't always work for me. Printing photos across the gutter on a two page spread is doomed to be problematic and it was. The vast majority however were a marvel to view. I do have an objection to the type font and ink color choice used throughout, particularly the Foreword and Introduction, and that cost one star on how I rated the book. Using a thin, sans serif type and then printing in a shade of gray ink was a big mistake. Very artsy but not practical. It may work for some readers but I had to use a magnifying glass to read it.

I'll be proud to have this book on the coffee table.

This coffee-table book did not meet my expectations, especially after watching the CBS segment on Vincent Laforet. At the very least there could have been a small description accompanying each photo. Other than well-known landmarks far too much was left the reader to try to decipher what was photographed. I would not recommend this purchase to anyone. In fact, if I could, I would return it for a refund.

A wonderful new adventure into an old story

A wonderful new adventure into an old story! I love the stories of the Old Testament. The themes that run through them are startling in their revelation of the human condition and God's pursuit. This Graphic novel is a great take on some of those themes. And I found that my son enjoyed picturing the story he has known for so long. He is 9 and he was also able to ask questions and make profound observations about some of the new ideas he saw as he read. For me that is high praise! Inviting kids to interact with the story of God in many different ways is a passion of mine! This book does that. It invites imagination to the table. Once imagination joins this dance - amazing things happen. The illustrations are lovely. I especially love the pictures of God creating Adam and Eve. A great read all the way around.

Seeling and Cariello imagine what Creation must have been like from the perspective of two very different angels

QUICK HIT – A picture is worth a thousand words, or so the saying goes. In this graphic novel retelling of the story behind the story of Creation, Seeling and Cariello imagine what Creation must have been like from the perspective of two very different angels.

We know the story of Creation. Let there be light! and everything that follows.

We know the story of the Fall. Let me be my own authority! and everything that has followed.

We even know the story behind the story. The I wills… The fall before the Fall, the transformation of God’s light-bearer Lucifer into the prince of darkness named Satan.

But we’ve never seen it quite like this. Illustrator Sergio Cariello tackles a difficult project with an adept hand, expertly retelling the story of Creation in a visually compelling way. Seeling provides equally strong writing, and while his dialogue seems hokey and unnatural at times, it overall captures the correct sentiment.

Rather than focus on the actually story of Creation, The Action Bible: The Battle Begins sees Creation from the perspective of two very different angels—Michael and Lucifer—and records their conversations as Jesus creates. Michael is overwhelmed by the Creator’s inventiveness; Lucifer is afraid this new creation will upset the status quo.

The one thing I think parents should note is that The Battle Begins is not an illustrated Bible. Especially as it takes a look at the motives of Lucifer’s fall, it actually is quite speculative and imaginative. That’s not to say it’s wrong, just don’t treat this like a visual representation of the Bible. Use it to cultivate conversations with your child about their thoughts on Lucifer’s motivations and whether and what they think their own response would be.

It can be difficult to get your child/tween talking about (or reading) the Bible, and The Action Bible is a great gateway. With its stunning visuals and solid stories, visual learners especially are going to be drawn into Scripture in a whole new way. If you know a young fan of comics, or maybe a young person who doesn’t like to read, this is a great way to get them started in the journey of Scripture.

The creation story with a paraphrase of events The art was good. The interpretation was a little strange.

'The Battle Begins: The Story of Creation' is part of the Action Bible. This is a graphic novel version of the Bible, but it's best, at least in this case, to think of it more as a loose paraphrase than an exact translation.

The story starts in the time before the events in Genesis with the start of the fall of Lucifer story. Michael and Lucifer have differing opinions about this new creation idea, and Lucifer feels like he should be more important. This is setting the stage for later. We then move to the creation story with Jesus being the one doing the creating. We see John 1:1 quoted here, and this explains his part of the Holy Trinity and why he would be present during creation. God creates Adam, and Adam comes across as a bit slow on the uptake. He runs around shouting out names for animals and seems generally clueless. We then see the fall of Lucifer and his tempation of Eve and Adam followed by their ejection from the Garden of Eden. The book finishes with a scene from the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem in the New Testament.

The art by Sergio Carillo is quite good. I've liked his style in the Lone Ranger book that I read. This is my first read of the Action Bible series, and it looks like he does most of the art for this series which would give the series some nice consistency. Where I guess I might have taken issue is with some of the interpretive nature of the book. We know that Lucifer was cast out of heaven over pride issues. We know that he shows up in the Garden of Eden as a serpent, but we don't know the exact details, so what we get here is not a strict scriptural interpretation of those events, but a writer's paraphrase of events. The portrayal of Adam struck me as a bit strange. He seems clueless and a bit of an airhead. Granted, he's a newly created being, and maybe I've never given much thought to it, but it still seemed like not a very idyllic state, especially when he meets Eve and jumps up, ADD-like, to name a gazelle. Jesus is nice, but he seems not very clued in to the dissatisfaction happening with Lucifer. I wanted him to be more powerful and all-knowing. I liked it, but just not as much as some of the other reviewers.

Useful technical reference for SQL DBA

Microsoft keeps adding new functionality to SQL server so the latest version, SQL 2008 R2, has become vastly complex. So much so that Microsoft has divided up their DBA certifications into three specializations: core DBA and developer and BI. Correspondingly, technical books on SQL 2008 tend to be divided up along the same lines. Thus I would have thought it would be impossible to cover the whole in a single book. But this book attempts to do just that. And it does a pretty good job, in my opinion. Of course it cannot go into great depth on any one subject, but it goes into enough depth to be useful to a practicing DBA in any of the three categories.

They manage it by making the book huge. So huge that, apparently, it can't all be printed in a single book. So when you buy the book, you get a book that is around 1700 pages (1550 pages of text and about 100 pages of index and 50 of front material) and in the back of the book is a CD that contains another 800 or so pages in PDF files. To put it in other words, the first 41 chapters are printed in the book, but chapters 42-56 are in digital format in the companion CD. So technically all of the chapters are in the book but only some of them are printed in the book.

I have found that with many technical books, after you get the book, you have to hunt around on the internet for sample databases, code listings, sample files, etc., as if they hadn't finished developing the code till after the book was published. And in my experience this hunt too often ends, at the cost of too much of my time, with limited success or complete failure. It was a pleasant surprise to find that all of the code and samples referenced in this book are on the companion CD included in the back of the book. And the code is very handily organized by chapter and by specific listing. I didn't check all the code, but I looked up and tried numerous chunks of code that was of special interest to me and I didn't encounter a single example of code referenced in the book that was not on the CD and in identical format.

Turning to the content of the book, it covers the basics - editions of SQL, installation, backup and restore, table structure, indexes, etc. In the CD is a section (chapters 42-50) for SQL developers that seems to hit all the important new stuff in SQL 2008. And there is also an impressive section of 3 chapters on the CD for BI including not only SSAS, but also SSIS and SSRS.

But I focused more on the relatively new technology, especially the stuff I am interested in. I couldn't think of a single topic that was not covered, at least to some extent. I found the following were discussed in enough depth to be useful to me: transparent data encryption, table compression, auditing, resource governor, service broker, table partitioning, and the use of various DMVs. I examined and tested the code in all of these areas and found only one query that didn't work - Listing 24.22, which is supposed to return details on partitioned tables. I did not test it on their sample database, but on one of my own development databases that is partitioned. It required the change of only one variable, and I have considerable experience with partitioning, but couldn't get it to work. I must admit I didn't spend a lot of time trying to debug the query though.

I found only one example of poor editing, and that was a case of repetition of the same several paragraphs of text on p. 29-30 and again on 42-43.

In conclusion, I recommend this book as a useful resource for any type of SQL DBA to have on hand. It not only has useful discussions of almost every topic in the SQL 2008 R2 world, but it has a lot of useful code.

Very poor QA process...

To be honest, I have never seen such a poor QA process for a book. The chapter I was most interested in has numerous errors in it. Let me explain...

This book comes with a CD containing another ~800 pages of supplemental chapters. Chapter 52, in PDF format on the CD, contains info on SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS). However, the CD's Chapter 52 code samples aren't for PDF Chapter 52--they're under the Chapter 46 folder. The "Chapter46_AllCodeExamples.sql" file has the correct code... For the first exercise in the chapter, if you paste the right code into the export query window & click "Parse" (like it says to do in the book), you'll get an error that says "Incorrect syntax near '`'." Unless you're already a SQL guru that knows the authors accidentally used the Unicode "open single quote" character as opposed to the standard ASCII apostrophe, you'll be lost. Once you fix that problem and click "Parse" again, you'll get the following 3 errors...

Invalid column name 'customerid'. (Microsoft SQL Server Native Client 10.0)

Apparently, the code in both the PDF and the code samples files include columns that aren't in Microsoft's "AdventureWorks2008" database. With further research, the book has multiple typos indicating to use the "AdventureWorks2008" database--the code should use be run against the "AdventureWorks" database.

Also, be forewarned that later in that chapter, if you choose to use the supplied .DTSX package to do the exercises in Visual Studio, the book doesn't include information on how to change the package's SQL Server name from the default "DBARCH-LT2\SQL08DE01" to your server name/instance. But unless you resolve the problems listed in the previous paragraph, it won't matter anyway since the destination table won't exist for the package...

Unfortunately, it looks like it's not simply a matter of Chapters 46 and 52 being swapped... It looks like the authors reorganized the PDF chapters, but didn't inform those responsible for the code samples...

Needless to say, I'm disappointed in the QA process. Checking on InformIT's site, there is no mention of errata or links to updated files...

A case where the Kindle book beats print?

I purchased the Kindle edition and am pleased to report that it does contain all 56 chapters, so no need to download "part 2" of the book as a pdf. The graphics are in colour and in all cases the text in screen-dumps is readable (if fuzzy). The index uses a notation like "CD:2331" when referring to pages that are on the pdf included with the print edition. Thankfully these links take you to the correct location in the Kindle book.

The content is wide ranging but don't expect miracles in what is now a huge platform. For example Master Data Services gets only a short overview. Overall the book is very good value.

Even better than the first...

How A Gunman Says Goodbye is the follow-up to Malcolm Mackay's exceptional debut novel The Necessary Death of Lewis Winter forming the first two instalments of his Glasgow Trilogy ( the final book, The Sudden Arrival of Violence due to be published January 2014) , and I really don't know what I can add to the universal praise Mackay has attracted so far. With How A Gunman Says Goodbye, Mackay merely adds to the kudos of his first, with another taut and uncompromising but utterly compelling read, this time focusing on ageing hit man Frank MacLeod, whose comeback from a hip operation, has slightly dulled his formerly razor sharp senses, thereby damaging his long standing reputation as a hit man to fear, and a man whose long term options become increasingly limited...

With the same spare and mesmerising prose that so defined the style and pace of the first book, Mackay cleverly melds moments of tangible compassion with the grim realities of Frank's future options, that by turn raises empathy, yet an acceptance of the harsh truth within the reader as we see the diminishing of Frank's usefulness to his former masters. As the pace and coolness of the narrative decreases the passion of the prose, you are so aware of the decreasing circle that Frank finds himself in, with the uncomfortable realisation that his options are decreasing by the hour and that his future is bleak. As Frank considers a life spent at the murderous behest of others, a sad picture comes to light of a life unlived, that is so powerful in its portrayal with the tautness of Mackay's characterisation and prose. The control of this writing, so illustrative of Mackay's obvious love of, and homage to, the hardboiled tradition of American crime fiction is a joy, setting him largely apart from his other Scottish crime contemporaries, and highlighting once again the marked difference and freshness he brings to the genre.

Another interesting curve to the story is that we see an interesting reflection of Frank's potential fate, within his erstwhile protege Calum MacLean (the focal character of the previous book), a relatively young man, who carries the uncomfortable knowledge that Frank's life casts an unwelcome shadow on his own future, alienated from personal human relationships with a powerful sense of the clock ticking down on his long term usefulness in his chosen profession as a killer for hire. As Frank's power and position diminishes, Calum's star rises, but at what cost to old and young man alike, and is this the life that Calum really wants to maintain? After his crisis of conscience following his killing of Lewis Winter in the first book, MacLean is once again grappling with weighty issues, and Mackay's use of the stream of consciousness both in relation to Frank and Calum is rhythmical and mesmeric adding a pulse to the narrative, as they, and by extension the reader, come to realise the futility of their musings.

Mackay has once again brought us a brutal and dispassionate tale of the Glasgow underworld, but so cleverly undercut with moments of extreme poignancy that resonate with the reader on a very human level. A crime novel that is spare but emotive, beautifully constructed with an unrelenting tense pace, and compelling to the very end, thanks in no small part to the exceptional characterisation and Mackay's ability to depict the violent underbelly of gangland Glasgow. A remarkable read.

A worthy sequel

This book follows the travails of an older gunman, first introduced as a minor character in the first book of the trilogy, as he follows one of the well-worn exit stages at the end of his career. Whilst practically all the characters are the same as 'The necessary Murder of Lewis Winter', the shift in focus towards someone who was a minor character in the first book also helps provide new insights into the major characters, and maintains continuity. For those who enjoyed the first book, this one is a worthy sequel, with a good structure, and such strong characterization that the reader feels as if he really knows the people and the crime world being described.My only complaint, as with the first, is the structure. The books are a good read, and the endings seem abrupt, as if the author is compelled to finish them, not as if the story has reached a natural conclusion. But perhaps that's his way of hooking one into the sequel!

Very interesting written. The whole Glasgow trilogy. Life in the criminal world and its laws. Police in opposite. But also the thinking of bosses and their gunmen and drivrrs etc. A ki d of psychological analysis. Quite subtle. Worth of reading.

A "Prepper" book that actually has something new! One of the best I've read.

This is one of the best thought out and put together books on why and how to prepare that I have seen, and I've read a LOT of books. I was hesitant to purchase this one (since I have read so many) because it seems, in the preparedness realm, there is nothing new under the sun. I'm happy to say that this book broke that mold. Having been taking measures to look after my family and be as self sustainable as possible for several years now, I DID find new and helpful information in this book as well as some considerations I had not thought of. Excellent resource. I am seriously considering purchasing a second copy for my parents.

**I want to add, the book is broken up into two parts, but one volume. This is confusing when you look at the first table of contents and realize it only goes halfway through the book. After that, you find the second table of contents in the middle of the book and have an "AHA" moment and from there your thinking becomes "Wow, This was money well spent!". The first part of the book goes over all of the reasons why we should prepare and really helps inform you in a detailed (not not overwhelmingly detailed) manner to be able to state your case and have confidence in what you are doing. The second half is your huge resource of how to prepare, what to purchase, where to get it, why you need it, etc. The list of items for barter made far more sense than any list I've seen to date. All in all, this is truly the best thought out book I've seen.

The only book you'll need that combines both the "why" and the "how-to" after our next crisis...

Really enjoyed this book. Well written, with the first half focusing on some of the potential causes of America's (or the world's) next crisis. The second half provides practical prepping "how to's". There is a great summary at the back for things to "hoard" and barter. This is the kind of book that you can read a chapter or two, try to incorporate what the author is saying, and then come back again to learn more. I'm not a big prepper, but the more time goes on the more I do believe something big will happend (most likely either a financial meltdown due to our debt, or an EMP). Note: The author is a Christian and isn't apologetic; he makes the comparison between our times and the time of Noah and the arc. Like the title, love the book!

Troubling, But Necessary

I've been reading Michael Snyder's blog, The Economic Collapse, for years and I'm so grateful to him for all the work he's done to educate millions of us around the world. The global economy could unravel over the next few years and many people are going to be in a state of shock because they never believed the warnings.

Update: August 4, 2015 - Just finished reading Barbara Fix's section. I've been daunted by preparedness books before, but she really makes it simple. Thank you Barbara!
