This book is recommended for anyone searching for eerie "true" tales of the unexplained. It contains chilling small stories with pictures galore of accounts all around the world.

Topics include: prophecies, coincidences, anomalies, spontaneous human combustion, appearances and disappearances, monsters, spectral incursions, UFOs, atmospheric and astronomical oddities, strange things from above, cures and immunities, as well as signs and wonders.

The book is a little dated, but overall it is very interesting. It will leave you wondering, maybe even a little fearful of the unknown. At least, it did for me!

Mysteries captivate my waiting room

I haven't read this book, but it is the biggest hit in my waiting room. I constantly get requests to make copies of stories and to take home the book for the weekend. I always see people reading it. It is a compilation of stories of mystery, ufo and ghost stories. I must take it home myself to read.

Judith A. Rubin, PhD, ATR-BC, is a licensed psychologist, a child and adult psychoanalyst, and a past president and honorary life member of the American Art Therapy Association. Surprisingly good reference

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It's an old book printed in 1966. I got it used thinking it would only be okay, but it turns out its a pretty good figure reference book. Lot's of good usable poses both dynamic and casual that most artist would find useful. A lot of them large full-page or half-page size photos. Plenty of standing, sitting, lifting, jumping poses and more that you could find common use for. The pictures are all in black and white, and this was not a problem for me. With low quality of colored pics back in the 60's black and white only was probably a better decision. Overall really good book, however there was only one problem, which is why I deducted a star and I'll get to that later.

Now there are only 2 models in this book, but they are excellent choices as far as models go. They both pose well and have good classical male and female physique types. And I just want to point out the female model is strikingly beautiful, with a classic waistline, with just the right amount of curves that's wonderful to draw. With stand-alone figure reference products like these I have to honestly say that the models make or break it, specially if you only have two. There are some that don't care which models are used, but most artist whether they admit it or not, do care. --This after all is where the very idea of the muse comes from, which I believe all great artist innately understands. The right models can both pose and have the ability to inspire.

As for one real negative in this book which is why I only gave it 4 stars, being that this was made in the 60's they covered up the models 'private' areas. The male model was wearing a g-string, I've heard of artist always saying that they hated g-strings on models, ...now I know why. There are this annoying unnatural lines made by the strings on the male figure. It really throws off the natural flow of the form. Sometimes you can't tell what if it's a real part of the body or if it's the string. I never thought g-strings where big deal in messing with how you view the figure, ---they are! And the female model's genital area is blurred out and they did a really bad job of it in some pictures (60's technology I guess). It was very annoying how bad a job they did in some cases, she looked more like a toy doll in a few pictures than a real human, very weird to look at. Most discriminating artist do prefer entirely nude figures without any type of covering or editing, and I can see why. Both figures are still capable of being drawn even with these cover-ups, they get in the way but not overly so, although in some pictures its very annoying and unnatural to see. I really believe this one decision by the publishers to cover-up the genital areas was what kept this book from becoming a true classic that would have been reprinted over and over again to this day.

Catherine Spencer Strikes Gold Again

"The Millionaire's Marriage" is the best of Catherine Spencer's many fine romance novels. The plot is easy to relate to yet so ingenious. It is the story of a couple split apart by a misunderstanding. When they get together to pretend to be happily married, the adventure begins.
Gabriella, the Hungarian bride of a Max, a Canadian millionaire, loves him so intensely. Yet Max cannot forgive her the circumstances that brought them to the altar. She counters his accusations by leaving Max and becoming independent via a successful worldwide career as a model. As the book starts they are reuniting after 18 months separation for the sake of her parents who are visiting them in Vancouver.
Through flashbacks, all the delicious passion of their first love is contrasted against their discomfort at being together again. I could feel their irresistible attraction for each other. Max fought this attraction so resolutely. Gabriella fervently wished it were otherwise.
What empathy their situation evokes. What humor and poignancy Catherine Spencer shares as she describes their sniping at each other yet all the while longing for each other. Their experience rings so true yet seems so regrettable. Their coping with the pretense of a happy marriage is so real.
Max realizes his true feelings when Gabriella is in peril. The incident that threatens Gabriella's very life is described so authentically as one of the dangers of urban life. Gabriella's response to Max's reaction is a real surprise.
The final chapter is the best ending imaginable. It is so realistic yet so incredibly romantic.
This is a romance novel you have to read. Catherine Spencer always tells a fine story but this is her best ever. In conclusion, buy this book and read it; you will treasure it.

A nice book..Could have been even better..

I came across this book by chance and was intrigued by the title.. The Millionaire's Marriageis the story of Gabriella and Max.
They meet at Gabriella's place where Max Logan is a guest. For Gabriella, its love at first sight and she naively tries to seduce him which leads to certain unfortunate events leaving Max no choice but to wed her!!

Infuriated and feeling trapped, Max resents Gabriella and despite her various efforts, treats her badly. With a broken heart, Gabriella decides to leave Max. Two years pass and Gabriella is now a famous model known worldwide but with no contact with her husband. A family visit forces Max and Gabriella to act the part of loving husband & wife for the benefit of her parents who are old and ailing.

But can they manage this charade without their disagreements and resentments coming to light?
Can Gabriella still win the heart and trust of the man she loves?
Can Max let go of his previous grievances and forgive Gabriella for her past mistakes?
Is there a chance their marriage can still work out or is it too late for that?

The writing of Catherine Spencer is fluid and effectively portrays the various emotions of the characters be it the heartbreaking grief of Gabriella or the intense passion between her and Max or be it jealousy she feels even on the slightest indication of "another woman" in Max's life.

Though I liked the story, I cant say the same for the characters. Gabriella in my opinion was childish and though she is projected as having changed/matured during her two year stay away from Max I felt her still immature in her actions and reasoning.

Same can be said for Max who, despite all his good looks and God like bodily attributes couldn't endear himself to me!! I felt he was just plain stupid, selfish and extremely arrogant with no consideration for others. Firstly he joins in the so called "compromising activities" even though he should be aware of the repercussions being the modern man of society as he is projected and lets Gabriella seduce him. Then when he is forced by circumstances to marry her, he places all the blame on her with no consideration of his own part in all of this. Even when Gabriella tells him that she loves him and is willing to work on her marriage he doesn't cooperate. Two years have done nothing to improve him and all through the book I felt that Gabriella was better off without him specially after the hotel scene with his secretary where he blames Gabriella yet again and is non repentant about his own part!!

Even Gabriella's parents made me roll my eyes in disgust with their dreamy, old world notions and complete ignorance of the state of affairs right in front of their eyes. Even when Gabriella breaks down in front of her mother and says "I think I'm going to die!", her mother casually brushes aside her trauma and acts like its everyday occurrence that her daughter feels so distraught and heartbroken to feel like she is dying!!!
At the end of her parent's visit, Gabriella realizes from a remark from her father that "he'd simply played the game, along with everyone else" and had not been taken in by her "happily married woman" charade. But what does he do? Nothing! Plain and simple.. He just watches his daughter's misery and leaves her to deal with it with only I am "just a phone call away" remark!! All through the book, I felt that Gabriella's parents just thought their daughter to be melodramatic, naively stupid and requiring a strict controlling influence from her husband who they think should make her give up her career and perform her duties as a wife at home.

Even the happy ending could not bring that "Feel Good" factor for me. I felt Gabriella forgave him too easily.This is one book that interested me, made me feel heartbroken for Gabriella and made me furious with Max. I sometimes felt like thrashing him!!!

I had hoped for a better reasoning to the sequence of events which led to the happy ending..and just because of that I take away 1.5 from this book's rating and give it a 3.5 out of 5.

Had the characters and their reasoning been more properly developed, this book would have been a 5 on 5 rating book but alas that's not to be, leaving it a quick and light read which though entertaining falls short of being the memorable read it promised to be!
Definitely a one time read for me.
If you like intense romances with a somewhat different treatment of events then The Millionaire's Marriage is for you.

Not as good as other books

It is a nice book, but not as good as her other books. But that is ok, because even my favorite author Lynn Graham have some nice books not great. It was not so bad, I don't regret buying it. Like another reviewer said it could have been better.

The book arrived today and I am amazed by the stunning aerial photographs in this book

Several months ago the Washington Post published a picture section with some of the pictures in Air by Vincent Laforet. After seeing them , I immediately had to find this book and purchase it. It had not yet been published but the publisher was taking orders. The book arrived today and I am amazed by the stunning aerial photographs in this book. The bulk of the photographs were taken at night, with a few taken at dusk, dawn, or during the day. Laforet captures all the color, detail and patterns of major cities throughout the world. They really convey the enormity of these large cities and present both macroscopic view and more microscopic views of the cities from the air. Some show the patterns, or lack of patterns, of the roadways and layout of the cities. Others show the skyscrapers taken from afar while others provide a closer view. The colors come from the myriad of lighting sources to produce a wide palette of vivid nighttime colors. I have always loved the old black & white photographs taken of New York City, but now seeing the city and its skyscrapers at night is even more thrilling.

The book itself is a coffee table book, measuring about 11" x15" and is quite hefty. It is printed on high quality paper. I mention this because Amazon incorrectly lists the size as being 5.9 x 0.9 x 8.3 inches. My only complaint about the book is that the pages do not lie flat. Many, if not most, pictures span two opposing pages and the curvature of the crease detracts from the visual impact of the photographs. The photographs were clearly taken with a very high resolution camera, which adds to the visual impact of the photographs. I showed the book to my wife and she, being very budget conscious, asked how much it cost. When I told her that it cost $59, she breathed a sigh of relief telling me that she though it cost over $100. Considering the quality of the photographs, this book is a real bargain. This book will likely appeal to photography aficionados and world travelers.

Photos were great; font not so much.

I too just received my copy of the book which I had preordered before publication. I'm a retired printer so naturally I checked out the quality of the printing and binding first and found both to be absolutely first class. No problem there. The paper stock used is appropriately heavy and opaque given that the photos were flooded with ink. Again, no problem.

The photos themselves were awesome! Reaction to art is highly personal so I won't comment too much on the photos except to say that the shots with shallow depth of field didn't always work for me. Printing photos across the gutter on a two page spread is doomed to be problematic and it was. The vast majority however were a marvel to view. I do have an objection to the type font and ink color choice used throughout, particularly the Foreword and Introduction, and that cost one star on how I rated the book. Using a thin, sans serif type and then printing in a shade of gray ink was a big mistake. Very artsy but not practical. It may work for some readers but I had to use a magnifying glass to read it.

I'll be proud to have this book on the coffee table.

This coffee-table book did not meet my expectations, especially after watching the CBS segment on Vincent Laforet. At the very least there could have been a small description accompanying each photo. Other than well-known landmarks far too much was left the reader to try to decipher what was photographed. I would not recommend this purchase to anyone. In fact, if I could, I would return it for a refund.

A wonderful new adventure into an old story

A wonderful new adventure into an old story! I love the stories of the Old Testament. The themes that run through them are startling in their revelation of the human condition and God's pursuit. This Graphic novel is a great take on some of those themes. And I found that my son enjoyed picturing the story he has known for so long. He is 9 and he was also able to ask questions and make profound observations about some of the new ideas he saw as he read. For me that is high praise! Inviting kids to interact with the story of God in many different ways is a passion of mine! This book does that. It invites imagination to the table. Once imagination joins this dance - amazing things happen. The illustrations are lovely. I especially love the pictures of God creating Adam and Eve. A great read all the way around.

QUICK HIT – A picture is worth a thousand words, or so the saying goes. In this graphic novel retelling of the story behind the story of Creation, Seeling and Cariello imagine what Creation must have been like from the perspective of two very different angels.

We know the story of Creation. Let there be light! and everything that follows.

We know the story of the Fall. Let me be my own authority! and everything that has followed.

We even know the story behind the story. The I wills… The fall before the Fall, the transformation of God’s light-bearer Lucifer into the prince of darkness named Satan.

But we’ve never seen it quite like this. Illustrator Sergio Cariello tackles a difficult project with an adept hand, expertly retelling the story of Creation in a visually compelling way. Seeling provides equally strong writing, and while his dialogue seems hokey and unnatural at times, it overall captures the correct sentiment.

Rather than focus on the actually story of Creation, The Action Bible: The Battle Begins sees Creation from the perspective of two very different angels—Michael and Lucifer—and records their conversations as Jesus creates. Michael is overwhelmed by the Creator’s inventiveness; Lucifer is afraid this new creation will upset the status quo.

The one thing I think parents should note is that The Battle Begins is not an illustrated Bible. Especially as it takes a look at the motives of Lucifer’s fall, it actually is quite speculative and imaginative. That’s not to say it’s wrong, just don’t treat this like a visual representation of the Bible. Use it to cultivate conversations with your child about their thoughts on Lucifer’s motivations and whether and what they think their own response would be.

It can be difficult to get your child/tween talking about (or reading) the Bible, and The Action Bible is a great gateway. With its stunning visuals and solid stories, visual learners especially are going to be drawn into Scripture in a whole new way. If you know a young fan of comics, or maybe a young person who doesn’t like to read, this is a great way to get them started in the journey of Scripture.

The creation story with a paraphrase of events The art was good. The interpretation was a little strange.

'The Battle Begins: The Story of Creation' is part of the Action Bible. This is a graphic novel version of the Bible, but it's best, at least in this case, to think of it more as a loose paraphrase than an exact translation.

The story starts in the time before the events in Genesis with the start of the fall of Lucifer story. Michael and Lucifer have differing opinions about this new creation idea, and Lucifer feels like he should be more important. This is setting the stage for later. We then move to the creation story with Jesus being the one doing the creating. We see John 1:1 quoted here, and this explains his part of the Holy Trinity and why he would be present during creation. God creates Adam, and Adam comes across as a bit slow on the uptake. He runs around shouting out names for animals and seems generally clueless. We then see the fall of Lucifer and his tempation of Eve and Adam followed by their ejection from the Garden of Eden. The book finishes with a scene from the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem in the New Testament.

The art by Sergio Carillo is quite good. I've liked his style in the Lone Ranger book that I read. This is my first read of the Action Bible series, and it looks like he does most of the art for this series which would give the series some nice consistency. Where I guess I might have taken issue is with some of the interpretive nature of the book. We know that Lucifer was cast out of heaven over pride issues. We know that he shows up in the Garden of Eden as a serpent, but we don't know the exact details, so what we get here is not a strict scriptural interpretation of those events, but a writer's paraphrase of events. The portrayal of Adam struck me as a bit strange. He seems clueless and a bit of an airhead. Granted, he's a newly created being, and maybe I've never given much thought to it, but it still seemed like not a very idyllic state, especially when he meets Eve and jumps up, ADD-like, to name a gazelle. Jesus is nice, but he seems not very clued in to the dissatisfaction happening with Lucifer. I wanted him to be more powerful and all-knowing. I liked it, but just not as much as some of the other reviewers.
