Stunning art instruction........

Stunning art instruction from a gifted artist is how to describe this instructional and visually beautiful book. Yukiko Miyai is a brilliant artist who has written a most inclusive tome on how to use soft clay and transform it into spectacular flowers and floral arrangements.

I first saw her on a recent episode of The Martha Stewart Show and she was displaying the incredible lifelike floral peices that she made using soft clay. In and of itself, soft clay is a great medium, but to be able to mold it and arrange it and ply it into bouquets of flowers bursting with colors is where the title of "artist" comes about. The arrangements she created looked real, and that's the beauty of knowing how to mold and shape this clay.

To begin, getting a hold of a copy of this book required Herculean efforts. Amazon initially didn't have this, so I placed myself on the waiting list. In trying the local bookstore giants, I had to place my name on their waiting list as well. Fortunately, there was a brief window of availability from our friends here at Amazon, and I seized it, and the book, but it's become "unavailable" once again. Therefore my advice is when you see a copy anywhere, grab it! If all other avenues fail, you could try the Deco Art website, and purchase directly from the company.

The book itself is hardcover with a spiral spine. The layout and look is soft and pastel, as are all the breathtaking arrangements. The photography is superb, detailed, and all shots are close-up. You will have a hard time realizing that what you're looking at, is what can be transformed from clay. The education you will receive begins.......

INTRODUCTION: Yukiko describes how her gifted mother began this art form through years of trial and error until she found the right consistency of this medium. Then her mom began classes and workshops and as Yukiko grew up, she learned and expanded this art form to where it is today.

GETTING STARTED: Basic materials, tools, and other materials.

WORKING WITH THE CLAY: How to use the basic techniques to shape the clay and make the stems and leaves, as well as how to attach the flowers to the stems.

COLOR MIXING: How to take basic colors of clay and by incorporating other colors with it, in small amounts, make primary and pastel colors.

FLOWERS: Through the use of molds, the real fun begins with making roses, plumeria, daffodils, gerbera daisies, lilacs, hibiscus, peonies, orchids, stephanotis, pakalana (for lei's), calla lilies, poinsettia's, long stem roses, decorative topping for a gift box, decorated eggs, a "basket", chicks and bunnies, lei's, haku lei's (for wearing as a crown), hand-tied bouquets (one of my favorites), a "dress" for a shadow box, pumpkins, trick or treat bag, wreaths, and Santa ornaments.

Each of these projects have step-by-step photographs with detail so there is plenty of direction; it would be hard to error. And again, the arrangements are so spectacular, you will be quite please with your efforts, when they turn out just like the photograph.

And all the tools and products you need can be purchased easily through the company, and its website, which is located in Hawaii. So you would be hardpressed to find an excuse not to attempt these gorgeous projects, though they are time-intensive. Actually, if you could become skilled enough to make these lifelike clay bouquets, the possiblility of a business that caters to those who would like to keep their flowers and bouquets (brides for one) would be a good one.

Great inspirational book (for cakes as well)

I got this book to help me with cake flowers using fondant, since it is similar to clay. Some of the instructions can be alittle advanced but Yukiko has many u tube videos to help fill in the gaps. Also having had some experience working with fondant helps with some of this as well. Fondant is not at strong as clay and at times you must allow it to firm up between steps that may not be necessary with clay.

I took a class in Hawaii, where I learned about these great products...the book has great pictures to go along with easy to understand instructions..the only thing missing is how to attach the stems to the beautiful flowers...

Dr. Sinett offers a practical guide to health and wellness, focusing on back pain. He explains how diet, physical, and mental/emotional issues play a role in back (body) health. Stretches, postures, and other exercises are reviewed, as well as diet, including a comprehensive dietary plan/shopping list to help with digestion. The book is well-written, in practical terms, and includes thoughtful wisdom to overcome the perils of chronic back pain. It is recommended reading whether you have back pain - or not.

The book is well organized and easy to understand

Dr. Sinett's book is an essential tool for curing your back issues. His holistic approach to this issue is refreshing and helped me isolate the main cause of my pain. He gives thoughtful and thorough information on the sources of back pain and then lays out manageable solutions. The book is well organized and easy to understand. In addition, he explains some common myths. It's a must read if you've had back issues. I'm on the way to a cure for mine. I've had chronic back pain for many years and Dr. Sinnet's solutions are finally helping me to make real improvements.

About the Author
Dr Judith Done is qualified both in career guidance and occupational psychology. She has worked as a practitioner and manager in careers services, then ran professional career guidance training at Manchester Metropolitan University. For the last decade, she has been a senior manager in student services, and led the highly effective careers centre, at the University of Chester. Professor Rachel Mulvey has done the same (practice, management, professional training) but in the South East. She has done research at international level, and has written on careers issues for the academic and professional press. She has broadcast on careers, most recently on BBC4's Woman's Hour. Rachel is currently Associate Dean of Psychology at the University of East London. Both Judith and Rachel are Fellows of the Institute of Career Guidance, and passionate in their shared belief that effective career guidance transforms lives.

Omar Santos is a Principal Engineer in the Cisco Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) part of Cisco’s Security Research and Operations. He mentors and leads engineers and incident managers during the investigation and resolution of security vulnerabilities in all Cisco products. Omar has been working with information technology and cyber security since the mid-1990s. Omar has designed, implemented, and supported numerous secure networks for Fortune 100 and 500 companies and for the U.S. government. Prior to his current role, he was a Technical Leader within the World Wide Security Practice and the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC), where he taught, led, and mentored many engineers within both organizations.

Are you a network and security professional? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Omar Santos, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that gets you started with managing network security, install and configure network security features to provide additional visibility.

Author Santos, begins by providing an overview of Cisco Netflow and IPFIX. Then, the author covers the different Cisco NetFlow v9 export format and packet details, and includes a detailed comparison between NetFlow and IPFIX. He continues by providing an introduction to Cisco's Flexible NetFlow; as well as, covering the Flexible NetFlow components and fields. Then, the author provides details about the top commercial NetFlow analyzers. He then describes how NetFlow is used for big data analytics for cyber security, along with other network telemetry capabilities, such as firewall logs, syslog, SNMP, and authentication, authorization and accounting logs; in addition to logs from routers and switches, servers, and endpoint stations, among others. Next, the author provides detailed coverage of the Cisco Cyber Threat Defense Solution. He continues by focusing on the different techniques and best practices that are available when troubleshooting NetFlow deployments and configurations. Finally, the author covers several case studies and real life scenarios on how NetFlow is deployed in large enterprises and in small and medium-sized businesses.

MUST HAVE RESOURCE FOR IT ADMINS!

This is a great primer on Flexible NetFlow and IPFIX for those who have minimal experience with either technology! Omar Santos explains with clear language the basics for Cisco's NetFlow and how it relates to the open-standard IPFIX as well as clear examples for usage. I appreciated the way the book took me from a basic overview for the technologies into practical implementations on a variety of platforms, from Cisco IOS, to NX-IOS and even ASA and IOS-XR. This is a resource for every administrator who needs useful tools and understanding for Big Data Analytics including basic CyberSecurity and commonly available tools to collect and analyze the data. Introducing basic troubleshooting for several platforms was a true bonus! While it is not designed to be the ultimate source for everything with analytics, this book is a valuable addition to any administrator's library.

Good Book for Two Great Tools

Imagine getting a book on some topic you love; say a book about “beer”. You relish the idea of reading all about this incredible beverage such as the different types of brew, its history, ingredients used, great breweries around the world, and so forth. Once the book arrives, the entire content is dedicated to one brand of beer and never once talks about how it tastes. Omar Santos pretty much accomplished this same feat with Network Security with Netflow and IPFIX .

First of all Dr. Santos has been quite busy pushing out books for Cisco. He just coauthored a book on security a few months back so he was probably very busy to put full effort into this book on Netflow. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Netwflow, it is probably one of the best network forensic tools ever created. That was the book I was expecting; one filled with all the different ways to use Netflow for forensic investigations and security of network traffic. Network forensic is very different from digital forensics because data is streaming across network devices at high speeds. Digital forensics usually involves locating static data off of evidence sitting right in front of you. They are two completely different fields with network forensics being incredibly advanced compared to the former.

Cisco created Netflow many years ago as a tool to collect data usage information for billing clients, locating bottlenecks, bandwidth scaling and basic tools normally associated with administrative tasks. Somewhere along the line somebody realized that Netflow can track much more useful information that can be used to recreate events, gather evidence of a crime, exonerate someone of a malicious act and help create logs for moving attacks to safer networks.

Netflow works on many devices besides Cisco so it is a tool that is usually installed as the network is created or when a savvy security administrator takes over a network. Basically, it is an essential tool in this line of work. Everyone thinks Wireshark is the bomb but Netflow works at a much higher level of traffic flow for filtering and collecting packets. I have nothing against Wireshark and use it on a regular basis yet Network is much more reasonable when you are dealing with terabytes of traffic per second on multiple connected devices.

Omar Santos does a good job of covering some of the open source tools like export protocols sFlow and Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP). Both tools allow you to collect information about the data that crossed your network both inbound and outbound. As a security professional and a network forensic specialist, you rely on analytical tools to help you sort through all the hay to get to the needle.

As with all Cisco books, this one is very vendor oriented. Netflow is covered in all types of Cisco products ranging from ASA all the way to FireSIGHT Management Control Center. The different configurations are discussed in-depth which is nice if all your products are Cisco. Most organizations have a wide range of vendor products but at least you can use the configuration information as a map to help you understand your network devices. I was pretty impressed with the detailed information presented in the book but it kind of felt like a cheatsheet at certain points.

I love cheatsheets but I want them at the end of the book, not as the main content of a book. Mr. Santos covers a wide range of security uses for Netflow and IPFIX. I was expecting more information focused on the forensic abilities of these two incredible tools. There are multiple ways Omar shows the reader how to use the filtering aspects of these tools to make life easier. As with Wireshark, you gotta filter all that data or else you will lose your mind.

Both GUI and CLI are given equal discussion time in the book. We all know the real strength in any product is in the CLI, using switches and attributes to add power to commands. But we also know that sometimes we want to see what is happening to the thousands of packets we are examining.

Let’s face it: you would not but this book unless you knew the importance of these tools. The book does a great job of covering a wide range of the abilities of the tools. I was just expecting more specific details on network forensics. Because of my own expectations, I was a bit disappointed on the content. Maybe if I were a network guy, I’d be more impressed.

Netflow and IPFIX are two very different tools and have enormous capabilities if you know how to use them. Network Security with Netflow and IPFIX by Omar Santos is a good stab at all this complex information. These are not logging tools. If you are using them as logging tools than you are missing some serious heavy network help. If you want to learn about network forensics, this book is a good place to start.

About the Author
Ioannis Pitas, IEEE fellow, received the Diploma and PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, both from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Since 1994, he has been a Professor at the Department of Informatics of the same University. He served as a Visiting Professor at several Universities. His current interests are in the areas of intelligent digital media, image/video processing (2D/3D) and human-centered interfaces. He has published over 700 papers, contributed in 39 books in his areas of interest and edited or (co-)authored another 9 books. He has been invited speaker and/or member of the program committee of many scientific conferences and workshops. In the past, he served as Associate Editor or co-Editor of eight international journals and he was General or Technical Chair of four international conferences (including ICIP2001). He participated in 67 R&D projects on digital media, primarily funded by the European Union and is/was principal investigator/researcher in 40 such projects. He has 16500+ citations to his work and h-index 63+ (2013).

Understanding the use of video in 3D graphics and web content development

I found that the book is a detailed and technically accurate introduction to digital video and TV. Yet, it contains on math. Being a 3D graphics programmer and web application/platform developer, I always wanted to learn more on these topics that I did not have a chance to study in detail. After all, my movie animations are viewed in the web by video streaming! So, it is nice to know about video compression and streaming standards, when developing animated content. I also enjoyed reading the use of video analysis in postproduction, that can range from game to movie development! Moreover, the chapter of three-dimensional digital television introduced me to the new 3DTV era, giving me rise to produce 3D animation movies.

Very useful in understanding digial media concepts for application development

Being a programmer developing digital media applications, I am very interested in
grasping issues related to digital video acquisition, processing, analysis and compression.
This book helped me greatly in understanding correctly these topics and grasping
concepts like motion estimation, noise filtering, transform-based video compression.
The chapters on video and TV standards, like MPEG-2, MPEG-4, MPEG-7 and
DVB, ATSC, ISDB, DIMB were very useful as well.

The book is the ideal introduction to digital video and TV to be used in developing
digital media tools and applications e.g. for web environments.

Full technical, yet easy to read coverage of digital video and TV

This is an outstanding book, having exhaustive technical coverage of all topics
related to digital video and television. It has no math and I found it very easy to understand.
It covers the entire video production and distribution chain from image/video shooting
to video processing, postproduction, compression and broadcasting.
New topics are of special interest: like 3DTV and digital cinema.
It is ideal for university and college students specializing on digital media, TV,
multimedia, web design, signal/image/video processing, graphics
coming either from the creative or the technical side.

Say "Yes" instead to your kids.

I did receive a free sample of the product in exchange for my post.

When I saw the title Never Say No: Raising Big Picture Kids, I thought, “Oh, great. A book about child-centered parenting, where the kids run the home.” But then I saw it was written by Mark and Jan Foreman, who are parents of Jon and Tim Foreman, of the Christian band Switchfoot. I don’t know if you know who they are, but they are the band behind the songs “This is Your Life,” “This is Home,” “Only Hope,” “Dare You to Move,” “Meant to Live” and more. They’ve been one of my favorite groups for a few years. That had me interested, so I signed up for this blog tour.

I have to say first of all that this isn’t a “fast food” type of book. It’s more like a full 6 course meal! There’s a lot of information to digest, so you shouldn’t try to get through it in one quick sitting.

You can really tell that they both love the Lord so much and they both love their boys fiercely. They don’t claim to be perfect parents. Many mistakes were made in their parenting adventure. But the mistakes they made, as well as the successes they had, can help all other parents with their own child-raising.

There’s something neat about reading words from the parents of favorites. I have always admired Switchfoot’s use of weaving the relevant, the deep and the “cool” all at once. I see now where the guys get it from. :) The book is really well written. I like how they indclude stories of their boys’ childhood, and stories of their own lives, in each chapter. The book’s like a mix of a parenting help book, a memoir and a devotional. There were so many parts that I had to highlight because they were so good, that I was unable to choose just a few for this review.

I would suggest that every parent go out and get this book, or download an e-version. There is so much wisdom and love within the pages. I was truly blessed by reading it, and I know my children will be equally blessed because of the change in me. It’s one to buy for someone as a baby shower gift. The new parents probably won’t realize the relevance at first, but once you read through it, it’s pretty obvious that the wise advice is good from birth and beyond.

I want to buy this for everyone who is around my child. Amazing book.

When I read a good book, I find myself with my pencil, underlining here and there the little things that stick out, or that I want to remember. I have worn out my pencil on this book. I think I might have underlined more than I didn't. I have stars marking specific sections, I have notes to myself in it. And I have plans to re-read this amazing book as soon as I can with my husband and go through it slowly and digest it even more, and work through each of the questions at the end of each chapter.

In case you couldn't tell. I was blown-away by this book. It is amazing. As a new parent I am eager to learn from those who have gone before me. And this was probably the best parenting book I have ever read. This is a book I want to hand out to all of those who are closest to me as I raise my child. I want them to have the beliefs in this book.

Mark and Jan are richly in love with Christ and their children. This is not about letting your child have everything they want--but about saying yes to being there with your children. To never saying no to the call of your child to come and be with you. You need to read this book. Seriously. I can't do it justice in this review but it is worth the time to read through it and go through the questions at the end of the chapter. You won't regret the time spent reading this book.

Mark and Jan are honest and candid in their mistakes and growth as parents. They are not perfect but they have such an amazing friendship with their children and have given their children such freedom to become who God has designed them to be that it inspires me as a parent. I think it will inspire you as well.

I highly, highly recommend this book.

The Imaginative & Inspiring Parenting World of YES

There are several Christian parenting books out there but very few that take us through the imaginative and inspiring parenting world of YES. Mark and Jan Foreman’s new book “Never Say No: Raising Big Picture Kids” is by far one of the best parenting books I have read in years!

Many words have been used to describe the book including: holistic, road map, inspiring, wise, authentic and game changing. I agree wholeheartedly. The central theme of the book is the premise that “God is one big YES for us, and we want to pay it forward to our own kids.”

This book will challenge you to connect with the heart of your child and delight in raising wise young people who will one day leave your home well-rounded and ready to take on the world!

Eavesdropping on the Dead

“I wonder am I buried in the Pound Plot or the Fifteen-Shilling Plot? Or did the devil possess them to dump me in the Half-Guinea Plot, after all my warnings?,” thus begins Graveyard Clay a refreshingly cheeky novel brimming with piss and vinegar. Caitriona Phaidin has died and gone into the graveyard clay from which she gossips, ruminates, and generally bitches the day away with her neighbors. The newly buried brings news, which spurs more rounds of devilishly catty banter. Woe to those without ready gossip on their lips. Reading this book is like eavesdropping, with its multiple—sometimes overlapping, and at times one-sided—conversations buzzing about. Even though each voice is unique, the story can be hard to follow. I greatly enjoyed this lovely dose of Irish vernacular. Reading this book makes me want to acquire more than one plot of my eternal real estate; just in case …
