I could not put this book down...

This collection of stories about WWII airmen on both sides of the conflict truly captivated me. I was sorry to finish the work. The story of the P-47 pilot trying to get his damaged plane back to safe territory made me feel like I was in the cockpit of the Thunderbolt with him! I could not wait to share the book with my friends.

he was not a very nice person; I found myself thinking of Ted Williams---who ...

After seeing the movie several times I decided to get the book so I could draw some comparisons. Much to my surprise I discovered that the author had drawn much information from actual lives and events---some accurate, others off base. Reading it carefully I found myself making notes on various aspects, and I shall set forth some of them.
First, Roy Hobbs himself. To be sure, he was not a very nice person; I found myself thinking of Ted Williams---who said again and again he wanted to be the best he was, the greatest hitter who ever lived---and, going farther back, to one Tyrus Raymond Cobb whose early life had a tremendous impact on the player---and man---he became. In spite of his terrible temper Williams, however, was more of a human being; I used to enjoy reading about his conversations with other players, particularly one pitcher for whom he had great respect (he even let this pitcher use some of his bats!) Not so Hobbs.
There was one scene, both in the book and in the movie, that had me laughing fit to split and still does, because it continues to put me in mind of an actual episode concerning those misbegotten St. Louis Browns circa 1949-1950---and an experiment that failed miserably. Briefly: the Browns had taken up residence in the cellar, and the front office decided they had to do something about it. You would think they would get a few players who new how to play the game, maybe a couple of coaches---even a new manager---but no. They went ahead and hired a psychologist in the hope that he could hypnotize this miserable team out of their doldrums. It didn't work. The psychologist was probably very good in other areas, but when it came to working with hypnosis---he was, in the words of a great pitcher with a great team in the American League East, a "one-trick pony" who had one technique that he ran into the ground. Of course it didn't work; this psychologist failed to consider that what was sauce for the goose was not necessarily sauce for the gander! No wonder Roy Hobbs got up and left, the manager chased after him, and Hobbs practically snarled at him "I signed a contract to play baseball, not for those shenanigans!" Well, the Browns started the 1950 season in the cellar; in May of that year they managed to win four games but still ended up in the cellar---so they fired that psychologist, and a couple of years later they moved to Baltimore and became the Orioles. (Incidentally, I knew that pitcher quite well; he had a good working knowledge of how to use hypnosis and a few other tricks up his sleeve besides that arm.)
Mr. Malamud devotes a great deal of space to the whys and wherefores of the hitting slump, and one can gain much from a careful reading of this section. He also devotes a great deal of space to Roy Hobbs' eating proclivities, and one must mention the great Babe Ruth who was perhaps the first of the great "fressers"---and here I must say something about a third baseman named Andy Carey who ate and ate and ate and where did it all go? (He probably had an extremely high metabolism, unlike the Babe and Mr. Hobbs.) And, of course, he discusses Hobbs the poor fish who went looking for love---or was it lust?---in all the wrong places and what became of him; there is indeed a huge difference between the ending of the book and the ending of the film, and the reader is invited to take his or her pick. Again I think of one Theodore Samuel Williams and one Tyrus Raymond Cobb, and how both of them came to grips with their personalities. Fascinating reading indeed.

I've loved the movie for many years and finally got around to reading the book. Certainly the book proves darker than the movie and shows the movie, beloved as it is, to be as "hollywoodized" as the best of them. Hobbs' character in the movie, portrayed by Robert Redford as so calm, poised, stoic, and generally kind is a lot different in the book - wild, emotional, reactive, and not particularly nice. Whereas in the movie, Hobbs' moral fortitude is unbreakable, in the book he wavers before eventually remaining true to his ideals.

On a side note, I'm not sure if Malamud was going for humor when he describes the massive amounts of food Hobbs consumes on some evenings in the book, particularly at the ill fated party toward the book's end, but I found his diet absurd.

My students love it!

I love Roy Hobbs! I use this in my English 11 classes, and they love it. Roy is a complex character that my kids relate to, and they get frustrated when Roy keeps making poor decisions. We use it to talk about the hero's journey, and it is very effective.

For any teachers out there, I made a study guide to go along with the book since it's very difficult to find a lot of teaching materials to go with it. It's on Teachers Pay Teachers. Shameless plug, I know.

~ Not worth the price

i'm growing tired of photographers doing nudes just for the sake of doing nudes. it seems that nudes sell no matter the quality of the images, and doing them is selling out by taking the easy route to making money in photography. i would be much more impressed with a photographer who becomes successful by creating beautiful images despite the subject matter not because of it.
that said, i appreciate the female form and the black and white images in this book meet that appreciation to an extent. but they often have a flat snaphot like quality to them, with high key lighting-the images certainly aren't high art. some of them are even blurry or not aesthetically pleasing to the point that if i was the editor, i would have excluded them.
in many of the images where a television is in the background, the photographer has put a still frame of a man's face (maybe his own) there. i find this very contrived and believe the images would be better without this unnatural busy-ness in the background.

In a word, "sophomoric."
Products like this make me never want to order online again.
As a professional fine art photographer who appreciates form, lighting, composition and subject matter, I believe the positive reviews for this book may have been posted by the author or by one of the author's friends; perhaps one of the "models."
If you enjoy looking at pictures made with a point-and-shoot camera of hairy, dirty women exposing their crotches then this book is certainly for you. Better yet, surf the naughty Internet sites...I'm sure the photography is better (and probably free).
I threw my copy away within 5 minutes. But kudos to the author, through book reviews and a halfway decent cover shot, he got me to open my wallet. Silly me. I judged a book by it's cover...Arrgh!

Endless collection of the same photograph, same pose, and same lighting showing little imagination. On the positive side, probably makes a good reference book if you want to take your own photographs. The black and white format adds nothing and they should have been shot in color. Add 1.5 stars if you enjoy pictures of nude women and don't really care about the photography

I have found this to be a fantastic resource for beginning a post-academic career search, both in terms of providing practical advice (i.e. how to effectively translate a CV into a resume) and comforting advice (i.e. the authors' anchoring message that it is not impossible, or even undesirable, to transition out of higher ed).

I've already recommended this to multiple colleagues and will continue to do so.

Get it! Get it! Get it! There can't be a better book.

I've read this book alteast 15 times during the seven years that I've had it, and I still love to read it. If I could meet its author, it would be like a dream come true. This book has made me into a better magician than I could ever imagine. I even love the smell of its pages. One thing though, don't get it if you are looking for apparatus magic. Essentially teaches sleight of hand, but boy does it teach. Its the best book, it has to be.

If you are interested at all in magic then this is the book to get. It lets you in on the secrets of a whole realm of different magic tricks (coins, cards, stage, close, etc....). Whats great about this book is that if you are new to the "hobby" then you can sample a little of alot and find what really interests you, then you can delve into another more specific book with deeper content.

So You Want To Learn Guitar? Beginner’s Guitar Lessons by Joseph Alexander Sets You on the Path and Gets You Moving

You’ve looked at this book, and you’re reading this review because you want to start learning the guitar, or you’ve already put your hand to it but You Tube isn’t giving you the info’ you need in a way that flows into a sensible learning progression; yes?

Me too.

You’ve been reading the Amazon reviews of book after book with things like ‘Beginners Guide’ or ‘10 Easy Steps’ in the title, and so many of them have those worrying few comments like, “This is really too advanced for a beginner”, or, “I suppose some people have different ideas of what a beginner is”, and you’re just not confident about spending your cash despite the other four glowing reviews.

I did that; window shopped for hours.

In the end I picked, ‘Beginner’s Guitar Lessons: The Essential Guide’, by Joseph Alexander. The reviews read about right, it didn’t promise that I’d be playing like Yngwie Malmsteen in just ten days (snake oil’s still oily, no matter how pretty the bottle). And too, perhaps I just got sick of searching, but I was given confidence by the number of positive comments on Joseph Alexanders books, and the range of well reviewed books focussing on modern guitar that Mr Alexander had published. I also noticed that the very few negative comments weren’t related to the course content.

What a spot of luck. The book is a gem; easy to read, easy to follow with exercises that are genuinely at a beginner level and not discouragingly difficult. More importantly, the true basics are covered: How to hold your instrument; how to hold a pick, how to strum, how to place your fingers on the fretboard and where should your thumb go? All covered quickly and concisely in amongst the other lessons so you can get on with learning to play.

I went from having to ask the shop assistant to audition an electric guitar for me because I didn’t know how to get it to make a sound that wasn’t discordant, to being able to put my fingers to about a dozen or so chords without needing to see a chord chart, knowing which chords they actually are, being able to strum several basic rhythmic patterns by seeing the standard notation, getting the basics of reading tablature and first steps towards hybrid picking, all in about 4 weeks at less than an hour a day.

Sure, I fumble at chord changes still, but that’ll come with time and practice. I know this because I’m already seeing the improvements in my ability. My rhythm has a way to go before I make it up to just ordinary; I’m always pulling ahead of the metronome. Again, time and practice, but ‘Beginner’s Guitar Lessons: The Essential Guide’ has given me the knowledge to get this far and the tools to practice with.

Along with the book you also get to download a set of audio examples off Mr Alexander’s web site. These small downloads are short and simple, and have real value: I was practicing a strumming pattern on a D major chord the other day, and I thought to myself, “damn, that sounds ordinary; this can’t be right”, a quick play through of the example and, “whoa, that sounds just like when I do it; I must be getting it right. I guess that’s why there aren’t many pop tunes based solely on quarter note D major strums”. It gives a way to check yourself, it gives confidence and somewhere to go if you just need to hear an exercise to pick up what supposed to be happening.

You’ll notice that there’s no mention here of picking away learning the notes on each string at the first three or five frets like those particularly dull books the guitar shop guys have in the rack. You know the ones; four weeks later and you can limp through a single string version of Mary Had a Little Lamb because you know how it’s supposed to go, not because you can actually sight read the standard notation you’re staring at while you do it. The ones that come with a free chord chart, but don’t actually progress to making a chord at any time before the book runs out.

They sold me one too. I’ll go back to it and give it some attention at some point too. Maybe.

Joseph Alexander’s, ‘Beginner’s Guitar Lessons: The Essential Guide’, is nothing like that; it heads you towards playing music with real world rhythm and chord skills from day one. Sure there are one or two dull lessons, but by the time you finish you’ll actually want to go back and practice those properly, so you can try them out with the more advanced things you’ve learned.

Sure, it’s going to be a while before my skill level grows into that Gretsch I bought, but I always knew there was no real way to go from music consumer to music maker over night. This outstanding book of true beginner’s lessons has me squarely on the path though, and hungering for more.

Where’s the down side? I want more. I want the next step. Joseph Alexander has other books and that’s where I’ll turn next. Some of the diagrams are a bit of a squint on a Kindle, but they can be coped with and after a short while you don’t really need those tiny chord charts above the notation except as reminders; they’re visible enough for that without any problems (I might add I’m as blind as a bat and wear glasses, so you probably won’t have any trouble).

If like me, you’re wanting to learn guitar and don’t know where to start, or aren’t satisfied with the start you’ve made, then ‘Beginner’s Guitar Lessons: The Essential Guide’ is a great first step that will point you down the right track and get you moving. I thoroughly recommend it. If a middle aged guy with no prior knowledge like myself can do it, then with the help of Joseph Alexander’s book, you can too.

This book is excellent for beginners, because it gives you all the staff to start and start well.
I have started to learn how to play the guitar but I had started bad because I have to have the solid first steps that this book give you such as the knowledge about chords, strumming, tempo.I am about to finish this book and I can wait to start reading and practicing the others ones.

Makes a difference in my practice

I've being playing for about a year now. My schedule makes it difficult to do the required routine. This book has helped to fill in those things I've missed or didn't get the first time. And the audio is great because sometimes I'm left wondering just exactly what sounds I should be making precisely. I am finally getting to the point in my practice that I enjoy it more and actually look forward to it. The other night we had a party; I played and sang silly songs with others at our own " Amateur Hour". I was great! Thank you
