About the Author
Robert Boice received his B.A. degree in the honors program at Michigan State University magna cum laude, and later received the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from MSU in psychology. He devoted much of his distinguished career to the study and application of techniques for helping faculty to become more productive writers. He served as a Professor of Psychology at SUNY at Stony Brook, NY, and conducted scores of workshops on his and other campuses pioneered numerous techniques to include highly successful post-workshop visitations to help faculty stay on track with their writing programs.

Advice that really works

Face it, all of us academics would like to think that someday a muse will descend upon us and infuse us with the capability to write the great work in our field without self-doubt, procrastination, etc. Boice shows empirical evidence that demonstrates these hopes are in vain (which is no big surprise to anyone), but even better, he provides the solution: writing is like physical exercise--the more you do it, the easier and more pleasant it becomes--if you write a little bit every day, even if you think it's pointless, at the end of a six month period, you will have 150 pages of writing to edit. It makes sense and it works. He even talks about reasons that people want to resist this truth, and how to trick yourself out of your writer's block. Grad students especially should benefit from the strategies he suggests.

Excellent book

I am halfway complete with my first textbook project.
I purchased this book and "How to Write a Lot" at the same time. The latter I should have returned, but this one is very good.. Good ideas.. puts writing into perspective. Easy reading. The analysis and suggestions regarding writers block were very helpful.

Not Great Style, But Super-Helpful; Changed My Writing Life

I fought against Boice's behavioral structuring but it was pretty funny to read his little dialogues with a similar minded skeptic. I tried the brief, timed daily sessions and found they freed me up rather than made me feel restricted, because over time I saw more pages produced, and had more raw material to work with; didn't have to wait for the long blocks of time.
Things that most helped me:
* Free writing to start, including not even about the material at first
* Only 15-30 minutes/day b/c so difficult to find the big chunks of time
* Keep a log of time put in and check-in weekly w scheduled call
Having reached the end, I'm for the first time more open to sharing rough drafts of ideas before they're ready. "Begin before you're ready" was his point, but I didn't get that, feeling it was too personal to share something so raw. Now I'm not going to think of it as quite as personal--it's not me, those words, because they're not final. Not the only thing I meant to say or have to say. So no criticism of them can really assail me. In fact it's just a work in progress that gets really helped by the mutual conversations. Over time, I'm struck by how memorable Boice's points are, like that one about "externality"-- --the importance of getting writing outside your mind and into other hands. Despite its writing style, I'd grade it an A- for truly helpful content. It helped me go from writing or revising about 25 pages a year to over 250 a year for the past few years.

Guide to build a large web application

If you want to build a web application, you need to consider WordPress as a framework because WordPress and its numerous plugins may provide you with many useful built-in functionalities. If you want to build a web application based on WordPress, you definitely need to read this book.

The book has provided me with a guide to build a complete web application using WordPress as a framework; from user management, data manipulation, through back-end and front-end user interfaces. The resulting application will not be a toy application, but an industrial-strength application.

The book taught me advanced techniques with the emphasis of a good design. The author thoughtfully discussed about the issues of usability (good user interfaces), code reusability, performance, etc. as any large application would require.

However, the book is not for a beginner. Despite the author's best intention to explain the basics, I was stuck as early as in Chapter 2 because I lacked the knowledge of WordPress Core. Only after I had read another excellent book (WordPress Design and Development by Brad Williams, et.al.), I could continue with this book (WordPress Web Application Development by Ratnayake). This is understandable because Ratnayake's book contains so much advanced information about building a large application. It simply has no enough room to cater more basic knowledge.

I have finished with this book, and I am glad that now I have the confidence to build a complete WordPress web application.

Must read for developers

As the title implies it covers using WordPress as your application framework. I highly recommend this book even if you are not building a web app. The author does a great job of breaking down complex development techniques that are useful regardless of how you plan to use WordPress. I found learning about how to use built in functions the most helpful. Did not realize how much WordPress provides for you as far as development goes.

Finally something you can read and enjoy

This book one of the rarest ocasions in SCM field when you read a book and enjoy its contents to the fullest. I agree with ine of the other reviewers that this is one of the BEST books about SCM. I highly recomend it as one of MUST have SCM books.

Probably the best!

I am and have been consulting in supply chain and logistics management for four years; worked in hands-on rolls for 15 years in Europe, the US and Australia and I also lecture at the University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba, Australia.
In the past 12 months I have acquired about 14 books on the subject. This book is probably the best. It takes a no nonsense approach to the significant issues facing logistics professionals, as the preface says, the book is written to serve M.B.A, B.S. and M.S. students and as a reference for consultants, professionals and teachers. It manages all this admirably and contains excellent cases and a couple of supply "games" that are an excellent resource.
Given the target market, the quantitative material is more than adequate - practioners want solutions that work, for the most part, there not terribly interested in "the mechanics" of the math, just the answer. With the powerful hardware and software available today, readers don't have to understand the "mechanics", just the inputs and what to do the outcomes. This book will give them just that.
I commend this book to any practioner, consultant, teacher or student.

The definitive book on supply chain management

The 1st edition of this book, authored by three leading scholars and consultants in the important, fast developing field of supply chain management, won several awards and high critical acclaim from professional associations, scholars, and managers.
The 2nd edition has addressed the few gaps in the the original edition, noticed mainly by by those who, like me, used the book to teach university level courses. Thus, in the new edition, anything complex (especially, quantitative ideas) is explained even more clearly and thoroughly than in the 1st edition. The managerial implications of research findings are spelled out even better, with more examples. Short, insightful discussion questions have been added following each chapter, and there are several new, interesting case studies in several chapters. Valuable new material has also been added, e.g., research findings and examples on how to design win-win supply chain contracts, and up-to-date material on the impact of e-commerce and information technology on supply chain management.
This book will be of value to all managers, but probably most to managers at middle and senior levels, as it provides a clear, coherent view of the entire subject while emphasizing strategic and tactical level decisions and planning. The authors have made a truly important contribution to the understanding and practice of supply chain management.

Ron Kurtus has worked in scientific fields for a number of years, including the Santa Barbara Research Center and the Air Force Space Systems Division. He taught Mathematics at the University or Missouri and Physical Science at the Milwaukee Area Technical College. An incredibly helpful resource for statistical modeling.

This book has proven incredibly helpful on so many occasions that I highly recommend it. Here are some examples:
Years ago, when I had a problem to deal with to improve probe yields on some major products, I presumed that a certain technique existed. I searched through several libraries, and finally found this book - and it had exactly the technique I needed.
Months later, an associate expressed frustration with his efforts to model a complex reliability problem - I showed him this book, and his eyes lit up as he saw the technique he needed.
Years later, when I needed to develop a statistical model for on time delivery, I again referred to this book to derive relationships between the standard deviation and average yields - but it also provided the information I needed on using Poisson statistics for process and assembly yield, and gave a helpful model for obtaining the cycle time distributions for a series of processes, such as from order through manufacturing and shipping to delivery of final product.

Excellent Statistical Reference

This book has been an incredible resource when I realized that I needed to use statistical models for my analysis, but didn't know where to begin. My background in statistics was basic and this book proved to be written so well that I could follow along. I needed details about how to estimate the parameters for the Gamma distribution and this book had what I needed. I wanted to run a Monte Carlo simulation and this book explained the fundamentals. The book also proved incredibly useful when learning about Chi-Squared goodness of fit tests and many other statistical methods. I highly recommend this book as a resource for statistical methods.

This is a great work even if it is fairly old and I strongly recommend it.
It provides a direct approach to the various statistical distributions and models which are used in engineering.
Recognising that most engineers have had sufficient exposure to math, It provides sufficient theory and then gets down to business without the longwinded 300 page detour through basic maths.

About the Author
Marianne M. Jennings, J.D., Emeritus Professor of Legal and Ethical Studies, has taught at the WP Carey School of Business, Arizona State University since 1977. She was named professor of the year in the College of Business in 1981, 1987, 2000, and 2010. She served as director of the Joan and David Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics at ASU from 1995-1999. Ms. Jennings has written six textbooks and four monographs in the areas of business ethics, ethical culture, and legal environment. She was director of the Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics from 1995 to 1999. Ms. Jennings has worked with government agencies, professional organizations, colleges and universities, and Fortune 100 companies on ethics training and culture. She is a contributing editor of the Accounting and Compliance Alert and the Real Estate Law Journal. Two of her books have been named Library Journal's book of the year. Her books have been translated into three languages. Her book, The Seven Signs of Ethical Collapse, published by St Martin's Press, has been used as an audit tool and a primer by numerous organizations for creating and sustaining an ethical culture. In 2011, Ms. Jennings was named one of the Top 100 Thought Leaders by Trust Across America and in 2012, she was named one of the 100 most influential people in business ethics by Ethisphere magazine. Ms. Jennings served on the board of directors for Arizona Public Service (now Pinnacle West) who owned the Palo Verde Nuclear Station from 1987 through 2000. She has served on INPO's advisory council since 2005. In 2015, she was named an affiliated scholar with the Center for the Study of Economic Liberty at Arizona State University. She conducts ethics training and ethical culture assessments for businesses, including Fortune 100 companies, government agencies, professional associations, and nonprofit organizations.
