Steven VanOrden has spent nearly two decades traveling, studying, living, and working abroad. His travels include over twenty-five different countries on five different continents. Steven continues to be involved in humanitarian work and lives in Northern California with his wife and two children.

THE TITLE SAYS IT ALL!

What was I thinking when I purchased this book? Having read many books about humanitarian aid work in Africa and around the world, this book was frankly a disappointment. The thread throughout the book became the author's account of his personal victimization under the guise of humanitarian work. The lack of the author's connectedness with the local population was disarming. If there were interactions with locals, names were seldom mentioned, with the exception of those who furthered his underlying 'missionary' agenda...or those of the disfunctional staff of the NGO.
If the fundamental principle of Humanitarianism is (compassionately) alleviating suffering, unconditionally and without any ulterior motive, then I would suggest that the only REAL person in the book was Tina. Perhaps the author could have learned more from her.

A great book that really makes you think. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is planning on or is considering working for a humanitarian organization, or who is planning on doing mission work in Africa or other parts of the third world.

Good Book- written well and interesting. Not the best book i have ever read, but it is education and worth reading if it crosses your path.
